We discuss the practical and theoretical implications that arise from the introduction of the category of phrasal verbs in the description of the Croatian lexicon. We also address the interaction of synonymy and polysemy as manifested in the semantic relations of phrasal verbs to their monolexemic counterparts and facilitated by the structure of CroWN. Its leading questions are how forms and meanings combine, what they mean, how they are used, and of course also how they change. The answers to these five questions make up the fundamental theoretical assumptions and commitments which underlie different theories of lexical semantics, and they form the basis for their various methodological choices. In this chapter, we discuss four main models of lexical meaning: relational, symbolic, conceptual and distri-butional. The aim is to investigate their historical background, their specific differences , the methodological and theoretical assumptions that lie behind those differences, the main strengths and the main challenges of each perspective.

Noun – preposition relations are analyzed as grammatical relations which participate in the formation of the lexicon, i.e. as grammatical devices which are productively used as lexicalization patterns. Based on the corpus analysis, [N PP] constructions in Croatian are identified and contrasted to English and French data. Lexical status of multi-word units in Croatian is discussed, as well as the level of idiomaticity of these constructions as compared to English and French. Whereas French and Croatian employ a similar lexicalization pattern, English uses compounding. The lexicon – grammar continuum is thus observed from the perspective of syntactic structures participating in word-formation.

The main goals of the paper are 1) to investigate differences and similarities in conceptual mappings based on the
concept of ‘touch’ in two typologically different and genetically unrelated languages by analyzing verbs referring
to touch in Croatian and Turkish 2) to see to what extent the formation of tactile verbs differs with respect to
lexicalization patterns in the two languages.

The Croatian language was one of 50 Indo-European languages included in the research. All research within the project consisted of several different types of speaker elicitation testing. Colour terms were one of the four basic areas of research. The results of the colour naming task are presented in the paper. The data was comprised of 1680 responses in total. The results of the data analysis showed some regularities in colour naming in Croatian. In this paper conventionalized lexicalization patterns of colour naming in Croatian are defined and distinguished from novel expressions. The goal of the paper is to define strategies used in colour naming.

This paper deals with the analysis of sports discourse in Croatian through the theoretical framew... more This paper deals with the analysis of sports discourse in Croatian through the theoretical framework offered by conceptual metaphor theory. Within this framework, certain metaphorical expressions found in sports discourse are analyzed as expressions of two conceptual metaphors: sport is war and sport is force. The analysis of these meta-phorical expressions combines the methodology of cognitive linguistics with corpus linguistics, resulting in the proposal of a new method for discourse analysis in general. In our research, we introduce the notion of the specialized digitized corpus as a basis for further quantitative and qualitative research. On the basis of the specialized digitized corpus created for the purposes of this research, it is shown how the formation of sports discourse is dependent on three categories of metaphorical expressions relative to the degree of their conventionalization within sports discourse: (a) conventionalized, (b) semi-conventionalized, and (c) innovative metaphorical expressions. Each of these categories is analyzed according to their frequency and various aspects of meaning that it entails. Through the introduction of the semi-conventionalized metaphorical expression category, we aim to examine the gradable line between language creativity and conventionality as it is formed within the discourse of sports.

Although previous studies have dealt with categorization and perceptual salience of color terms, few studies have been consistently conducted in order to investigate phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic devices languages use to form color terms.
The aim of this volume is to approach color data from a relativist and typological perspective and to address some novel viewpoints in the research of color terms, such as:
a) the focus on language structure per se in the study of lexicalization data,
b) investigation of inter- and intra-language structural variation,
c) culture and language contact as being reflected in language structure.
Topics of this book have a broad appeal to researchers working in the fields of linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and psychology.

Očekujem, također, da će ovo djelo biti od koristi i kolegama iz drugih disciplina humanističkih znanosti, osobito onima koje se u pojedinim dijelovima dotiču pitanja značenja.
