This paper explores an NGO-run project of the Trešnjevka Neighborhood Museum in Zagreb, Croatia in order to expound characteristics of its participative management model, which includes other NGOs, representatives of a museum institution, and neighborhood residents. The museum’s activities published on the official website and social media platforms were thematically analyzed according to layers of cultural participation. The results show a formation of a community of interests within a place-based community whose purpose is to represent heritage values alternative to those of the mainstream institutions. The TNM can therefore be described as a territorialized cause-based project whose management is predicated on value-based par...

The advertisements of the interwar period represented products of the Georg Schicht factory, founded in 1921 in Zagreb. In 1928, the company merged with the Dutch company Margarine Unie and in 1930 formed part of Unilever, the world’s largest multinational company in the oils and fats business. After the Second World War and the process of nationalisation, the production of cleaning and washing products and toiletries in Croatia was continued by Saponia Osijek, which grew out of Georg Schicht and was managed by its employees collectively, which was at the time congruent with the state’s politics and philosophy of s...

Communicative memory started to be presented in museums together with “objective” cultural memory. However, juxtapositions of communicative and cultural memory inevitably give birth to oppositions, especially in the case of traumatic experiences such as those resulting from war. The aim of the paper is to analyse the ways in which material culture and memorial sites can trigger contradictory memories and a range of different feelings, and to investigate institutional communication of shared and contested historical narratives in Croatia. The theoretical explication is followed by example thematically related to cultural and communicative memory of the Second World War in Croatia, more precise the Jasenovac Memorial Site/Museum ...

Research participants included families with young children and members of minority communities in Vienna whose visit was facilitated by two app-based guided tours developed for children. The research goal was to explore the impact of the mobile guide’s digital content and modes of communication on the visitors’ interaction with the guide, with the museum space and objects, and with family members. The families’ interactions were observed, recorded and analyzed. The results suggest that carefully considered and created content on mobile guides has the potential to provide novice family visitors with experiences that support their independence and active engagement, create opportunities for mutual facilitation, and support their different identities, all of which have been considered as conducive to inclusion.

The new museum needs to pluralize the range of possible meanings by accepting views and interpretation not only of curators but museums users as well. However, museums have been reluctant to adopt new approaches in their work. The paper therefore suggests a more acceptable, on-line model which allows for multivocal interpretations of museum material by connecting the museum data base and web 2.0 applications. The usual repository of actions facilitated by on-line social networks is mostly reserved for web sites outside the direct museum’s digital realm. Conversely, the web service presented in this paper supports participative activities on the very museum web site by allowing users to engage with museums’ collection. The collection in the form of...
