The central result of these investigations has shown that even common instruments for assessing the family system, its internal structure or the way it is interconnected with larger social systems rarely prove to be sufficiently reliable and even more seldom satisfactorily valid. The significance of the results for theory and practice is discussed.

This opens up a new round in the longstanding discussion about the function and significance of humour in psychotherapists. Based on the available literature the present state of the discussion is illustrated. This shows three things in particular: Against the background of a constructivistic epistemology therapeutic humour is shown in a completely new light; strategic and systemic therapists can make use of humour in different functional contexts; and in connection with a systemic approach therapeutic humour seems to be of eminent positive significance.

The analysis of recent reviews concerned with the efficacy of Parent Effectiveness Training (PET)... more The analysis of recent reviews concerned with the efficacy of Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) demonstrates, within limits, its reliability and helpfulness as a therapeutic measure for children and adolescents. However, parents do seem to benefit more than their offsprings, on whom, judged by outcome, the effectiveness seems minor. As to its indication, open questions remain. Taking everything into account it would seem somewhat unjust or premature, to erasure PET from the catalogue of approved measures.

Up until now only three experimental evaluation studies have been carried out in the field of child guidance under natural conditions. These studies are first described in terms of their methods and results and then placed in a larger context on this basis. Proceedings from these studies based on methodological considerations and empirical evidence, comments and recommendations will be made concerning methodologically satisfactory and practically significant future evaluation research. They emphasize in particular the different evaluation strategies as well as various aspects of validity.

Literature on the subject is first surveyed. The author then analyzes data on completed family size and offers two hypotheses. "The first hypothesis is that the variable marital status of the husband (first-married/remarried) has an important bearing on the final number of children. [In] marriages [of] remarried men the number of children is on the average lower. According to the second hypothesis the lower fertility of remarried women (by comparison with first-married women) is at least partially due to the fact that a higher percentage of these (remarried) women is married to remarried men." Four different evaluation studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Emotionally-Focused Couple/Marital Therapy when used to resolve difficulties between couples with slight to moderately severe problems relatively in regard to pertinent treatment alternatives and absolutely in comparision to nontreatment. In addition, its clinical relevance has been demonstrated. Moreover, five studies on the investigation of procedures have reached conclusions which concur with the theory of treatment postulated.

Its scope is substantially broader than the metaanalysis of Smith, Glass and Miller (1980) or the secondary analysis of Grawe's Berner Workgroup documented in Forschungsgutachten zu Fragen eines Psychotherapeutengesetzes (1991). The results indicate Gestalt therapy to be an effective psychotherapeutic treatment which is not inferior to other comparable methods of treatment. No definitive statement can be made concerning differential indication, individual therapy setting or long-term measures.

The main result demonstrates that both discriminance- and convergence-validity cannot be considered safe from "cohesion" or "control".
