The project requires students to (1.) complete four independent and commercial design projects under time pressure (2.) know all important functions of an interdisciplinary design team hands-on (3) learn to take on responsibility for certain tasks by slipping into four different roles (4.) form teams and handle complex human relations (5.) gain insight into different internal processes and structures of companies, depending on their organization, purpose and size. With the perimeters of science changing so does the subject of inquiry. Ethnology, a relatively young science underwent a drastic change at the turn of the century as unillineal evolutionism of the preceding century became obsolete and gave away to diffusionism. In this paper I want to outline briefly the development of two institutes of cultural anthropology--at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Vienna--at the turn of the century. It is not surprising that synchronous with this paradigmatic shift in ethnological inquiry the two institutes examined here found themselves in a time of great social as well as cultural upheaval. I took on the task of writing a kind of meta-ethnology, an inquiry into the socio-political and cultural forces that shape a scientific dogma, which in turn can and did change society. With the help of an empirical study it was analyzed which categories of customized products are preferred by women and men and if products are bought for self-usage or for gift-giving. A quantitative study with 247 participants showed that products in the categories “food & nutrition” as well as “personalized look” are preferably bought by women, whereas products in the categories“ made-to-measure-apparel” and “footwear” are predominantly purchased by men. The research showed that, in all product categories considered, women customized products for gift-giving more than men. This result follows the theoretical foundation in evolutionary psychology. In addition, in the category “personalized fashion” women bought significantly more products (i.e. printe...

Due to various historical, political, geographic and climatic conditions the divergence between those countries providing and those receiving help is so vast that donations of labor and/or money is simply not enough. Rather, communities have to be taught to support and develop themselves during the receipt of aid and especially after the help pulls out. It is our goal in this article to summarize one such "sustainable development" project. As volunteers for AMREF (African Medical and Research Foundation), we worked with the remarkable Makueni Applied Nutrition Project in eastern Kenya in the summer of 2001. Our job was to visit the various locations in this semi-arid and arid environment and to write a report on the situation of the diverse parts of the project. The Applied Nutrition Project (ANP) started in 1984 and serves as an excellent example of the significant help that can ...

That spirit is the decisive goal of designers yet it escapes definition, description and often evades discussion. This chapter is a meditation on the complex interaction between design and animism. First, an exploration of what is commonly known as animism is required, for the difference between animism and post-animism has only little to do with the belief in the life of things, and actually, is a severely outdated construct of the nineteenth century. Second, the current discussion on animistic epistemologies is reviewed in order to further clarify the term and to enable a more inclusive and relational discourse for product design theory. Third, some evolutionary considerations are dedicated to the question of cognitive epistemologies in general and whether or not humans are innately animistic, specifically. Finally, purposeful animism – the idea of designing animistic relationships between objects and users of...

Here emotional durability as a design direction is addressed since it seeks to create stronger emotionality and enduring interaction with things, which in turn can lead to a more sustainable use of resources. Things regarded as housing a spirit -it is assumed here -are more likely to be revered and protected.

Our current economic paradigm is based on goods being produced, which are used briefly and finally gotten rid of by the consumers. Such a system is so conventional, that we actually stop noticing it (Kortmann/Piller 2016) and continue teaching it in the business schools and design schools the world over. Design as a discipline needs to radically change to generate sustainable social and economic value. The aim of this article is to use the insights of that conference to demonstrate the transformation of current business models based on altered functions and possibilities of customers and providers. It strives to illustrate the urgent need for a detailed design process for the orientation of design students.
