- Flooding accounts for 44% of global disasters, with about 700 million people living in areas with intense rainfall extremes. As climate change accelerates, the number of cities exposed to extreme weather is projected to triple by 2050. 🧽 The sponge city concept offers a sustainable approach to managing urban flooding by using green roofs, permeable pavements, rain gardens, and wetlands to absorb, filter, and store stormwater. These strategies not only mitigate flood risks but also improve water quality, replenish groundwater, and enhance urban green spaces.Arup’s Global Sponge Cities Snapshot highlights how cities worldwide are adapting to these challenges by integrating green-blue infrastructure. The report ranks cities like Auckland, the “spongiest,” with 35% sponginess, and Sydney, which struggles with impermeable surfaces, at 18%. - 🌍 Streamlining carbon assessments in the built environment: Insights for the AEC industry A recent proof-of-concept (PoC) study from WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Autodesk, and six global AEC firms — AECOM, Arcadis, Arup, Foster + Partners, Ramboll, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) — has shed light on the challenges and opportunities in using BIM to standardize embodied carbon assessments. Key insights include: Diverse approaches lead to inconsistencies: Despite using the same BIM model, carbon assessment results varied significantly between firms, underscoring the need for a standardized approach. BIM as a data tool for carbon assessments: The PoC found that while BIM can support carbon data workflows, it requires intentional setup to ensure accurate material quantification for carbon reporting. Need for data alignment and QA/QC: Aligning BIM data with carbon reporting frameworks, such as RICS, is critical. A robust QA process can help reduce discrepancies due to variable workflows and assumptions. This PoC highlights the importance of aligning workflows and leveraging BIM for a consistent approach to carbon impact. As the industry moves towards net-zero, these findings point to the need for greater collaboration, standardization, and transparency in carbon assessments. 🔗 Read the full report for in-depth findings and recommendations: https://lnkd.in/dKK4r5Ah #SustainableConstruction #EmbodiedCarbon #BIM #OneClickLCA #Decarbonization

- 🇪🇺 Significant update on EU regulation regarding construction materials. On November 5, 2024, the EU Council adopted the latest Construction Products Regulation (CPR), introducing stricter sustainability and transparency standards for building materials across the EU. Here’s what manufacturers and construction professionals need to know: ✅ Digital Product Passports: The updated CPR introduces Digital Product Passports to enhance transparency and traceability of construction products across the EU. ✅ CE marking: The regulation now requires CE marking to reflect both technical performance and environmental impact. ✅ Environmental reporting: Manufacturers are mandated to report on climate-related indicators, starting with CO₂ emissions and energy usage, with additional metrics to be phased in over time. ✅ Expanded Declaration of Performance (DoP): The DoP now includes environmental data alongside technical performance, providing a comprehensive product profile for regulatory and market transparency. ✅ EU-wide compliance: The harmonized standards under the CPR allow products compliant with the regulation to be marketed across all EU countries without the need for additional certifications. The legislation has been approved by the EU council. Next steps involve the President of the European Parliament signing it, and the regulation being published in the Official Journal. It enters into force on the 20th day following its publication, but implementation will be gradual. Compliance will require revisions of all harmonized product standards (hENs) through the Acquis process, which will affect product categories at different times. 👉 Read the EU press release: https://lnkd.in/eMxv3pzn👉 Read more about the #CPR in this guide: https://lnkd.in/dKaPta8x
