In the haze of his mind, Mako vaguely remembered thinking that this was probably what an angel looked like.
When asked to describe the experience afterward, he found he couldn’t. He didn’t know a word that could accurately define the grace with which she slowly rose into the air, the sleek form of her moves; the divine presence that rained vicious chaos all around them.
He couldn’t say any of that, so he settled for “her eyes were white.”
What he failed to mention was the dull horror that had risen from his stomach as his gaze was trapped in her visage, the strength of the realization that he had never truly grasped before. She wasn’t Korra, she had never been Korra; Korra was just a shell for this deity that retained more power than most people could ever measure in their inconsequential lives. The brash little girl he had tried so very hard to disregard was an illusion, in reality she was everything. A goddess robed in human skin; a perfectly molded proof of a higher power. Radiant. Terrifying. Perfect.
This is an angel he has in his arms, and he refuses to let her go.
