Traditional encyclopedias, once the cornerstone of any worthy reference collection, have been replaced by online encyclopedias, many of which utilize open source software (OSS) to create and update content. One of the most popular and successful encyclopedias of this nature is Wikipedia. In fact, Wikipedia is among the most popular Internet sites in the world. However, it is not without criticism. What are some features of Wikipedia? What are some of its strengths and weaknesses? And what have other wiki-based encyclopedias learned from Wikipedia that they have incorporated into their own websites in a quest for excellence? This paper answers these questions and uses Crawford's six information quality dimensions, 1) scope; 2) format; 3) uniqueness and authority; 4) accuracy; 5) currency; and 6) accessibility, to evaluate Wikipedia and three other online encyclopedias: Citizendium, Scholarpedia, and Medpedia. The latter three have managed to maintain the advantages of Wikipedia while minimizing its weaknesses.

the Center for Communication Excellence (CCE) at
Florida Institute of Technology. Founded in 2006 to help
faculty improve the writing of their professional
documents (such as grant proposals), the CCE has
evolved from an institutionally funded center exclusively
serving faculty authors into a fee
-
based center serving
faculty, institutional clients, and graduat
e students. Our
research suggests that the CCE is unique, and we believe
that other institutions can benefit from the establishment
of similar centers to support faculty writing. Research is
the core of many academic institutions, and by helping
faculty sh
ape information more effectively, the CCE
promotes and protects the university’s intellectual
capital, one of its most valuable resources in an
information
-
based economy. Our paper traces the history
of the CCE from its establishment through its first
two
years
of existence. We discuss issues associated with
establishing a center, such as obtaining funding,
developing organizational processes, and meeting the
challenge of heavy demand. We show how collaborating
via the Internet proved to be the most benefic
ial
arrangement for our staff and the majority of our clients.
Finally, we offer recommendations for others who wish to
establish similar centers. Keywords: interdisciplinary
collaboration, asynchronous online collaboration, faculty
service, academic editing center
