fiv_cats - Profile (original) (raw)
This is a community for people who are caring for FIV+ cats and kittens. It is not a medical site. Please do not look to this journal for veterinary knowledge. If you have a veterinary emergency please contact a qualified Veterinarian.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is caused by a retrovirus called the lentivirus. It is similar to the retrovirus that causes FeLV in cats, and causes similar symptoms, particularly suppression of the immune system. It is also similar to the human AIDS virus, and is sometimes referred to as cat AIDS. There is no evidence that people can get AIDS from a cat that has FIV.
This community is for the the cat owner and caregiver to vent, share and get support in both good and bad times. While most FIV+ cats live for a longtime without manifested symptoms of the Virus, each case is different.
