With time and under diverse circumstances, it has changed its form and role, fulfilling different functions while evolving. The aim of this paper is to briefly track the evolution of the Caste System within Indian society focusing on how its role has changed, especially in a contemporary Indian setting.

One aspect of gender that is considered during its study is that of discrimination. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines discrimination as-'the act of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups of people.' Gender discrimination, hence, is the practice of making discriminations on the basis of a person's gender. This discrimination can be witnessed in the different structures and institutions of societies-At homes, schools, workplaces, legal institutions, and even in government structures.

The Homo-Sapiens have always classified themselves into certain groups. We started out as forager... more The Homo-Sapiens have always classified themselves into certain groups. We started out as foragers, hunters and gatherers. Then there was the emergence of bands, tribes, chiefdoms, empires and states. Of-course, they all did not emerge at the same time, or in a linear fashion (though some anthropologists would say otherwise), and they all differed from each other in their formation, structure, leadership and social relationships. To understand better the emergence of chiefdoms, empires and states, we much first understand what they really are and the characteristics that they possess. We must also keep in mind that human actions are adaptive techniques, and the shift from bands to tribes to empires to states was a part of humans adapting to changing environment.
