Its value is based on its utility for forecasting, issue identification or prioritisation, and concept or framework development. However, systematic guidelines for designing and executing a Delphi are not widely available. Concomitantly, a plethora of methodological interpretations are proving a source of confusion for the Delphi architect. This paper explores the utility of a proposed generic Delphi toolkit (GDT) for designing and implementing a Delphi study. An ecotourism research example is introduced as a basis for testing the GDT and for a critical review of its benefits and challenges for ecotourism research.

Amongst stakeholders, confusion has resulted from the disparate nature of these definitions. In the absence of a common definition or set of key tenets the challenge has been to ensure operational ecotourism that adheres to the theoretical underpinnings of the concept. Without some semblance of definitional consensus, ecotourism may be on a precarious course whereby the ethics upon which the activity is conceptualised, the natural environment upon which the activity depends, and the legitimacy of the industry are at risk. The ambition of this research is to disentangle a set of themes from the evolving definitional debate in order to provide a framework for the development of ecotourism policy and applications. Recurring themes are identified through the application of content analysis methodology to select contemporary definitions. Those themes that appear most frequently are then introduced as an ecotourism conceptual framework based on key tenets. The tenets are meant to represent a set of established fundamental beliefs central to ecotourism: (1) nature-based; (2) preservation/conservation; (3) education; (4) sustainability; (5) distribution of benefits; and (6) ethics/responsibility/awareness.

The problem, however, is that limited guidance is available to assist in the development of a sustainable marketing plan. This paper tests a proposed sustainable heritage tourism marketing model using a World Heritage Site case study – the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Canada. A lacuna between the model's components and the marketing activities at the Rideau Canal is observed. In combination with other mixed results found in the literature, it confirms that the fundamental challenge is short-termism while sustainable marketing requires long-term investments. This study offers a framework and rational for sustainable heritage tourism marketing at the Rideau Canal and other heritage sites around the world. Given that “sustainable marketing” is a relatively new concept, this study offers an important contribution to the marketing literature.

To avoid putting at risk the resources upon which ecotourism depends and the desired sustainable outcomes it purports to deliver, research and praxis must be equally sensitive to all the pillars of sustainability -social, cultural, economical, and environmental. As a first step, this study employs the Delphi technique in order to assess the import of culture for ecotourism, to develop a definition for culturally sensitive ecotourism, and to identify the barriers and opportunities associated with its implementation. Over 100 ecotourism experts from 39 countries were consulted over a six month period.

This has forced planners, managers, policy-makers and researchers to look abroad for guidance. And, this raises sensitivity concerns related to Chinese cultural values, perspectives, and expectations regarding nature-based tourism experiences. This study analyzes contemporary Chinese ecotourism definitions with the objective to identify a set of common definitional themes. These themes are them compared to a set of ecotourism tenets established through antecedent analysis of definitions from abroad. A discussion of universal tenets, cultural values, diametrical differences, and the achievement of sustainable ecotourism ensues. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In the ecotourism case, it provides the primary mechanism for promoting ecotourism opportunities (providers) and for researching and planning ecotourism experiences (consumers). As a matter of concern, the literature establishes that the congruency of traditional ecotourism marketing with established ecotourism tenets is limited. Ecotourism may be on a 'precarious course' whereby the natural environment, long-term sustainability and legitimacy of the industry are at risk. The scale of the internet and its use to promote 'disingenuous' ecotourism products may accelerate negative outcomes. However, our understanding of internet-based ecotourism marketing -both delivery and outcomes -is limited. Through the application of a content analysis framework, this paper assesses the congruency of internet-based ecotourism marketing with ecotourism tenets. The study finds the use of the term 'ecotourism' and its tenets to market tourism experiences is a well-established internet-based marketing activity, and congruency between ecotourism tenets and ecotourism marketing messages is contentious amongst the Canadian sample providers. It supports antecedent claims that disingenuous ecotourism marketing is the norm, not the exception. Recommendations for improving marketing success, long-term sustainability of the industry and delivery of 'genuine' ecotourism products are presented.

As part of the Aboriginal Tourism Network (ABORINET), a geocollaboratory was developed to support Indigenous tourism research. Indigenous communities are culturally distinct and remotely located and this presents geographic and sociocultural constraints when conducting research on issues affecting these communities. ABORINET's development focused on the specific goal of enabling collaboration between researchers and Indigenous peoples on issues related to Indigenous tourism planning and management, and the general issue of enabling the sharing of differing knowledge and management approaches among research and Indigenous communities. The purpose was to develop a multi-scale and multi-method data collection and analysis protocol for better understanding Indigenous tourism in a way that supports multi-site and longitudinal comparisons, for connecting Indigenous communities across the world, and for sharing the results in ways that are meaningful to stakeholders within and beyond Indigenous communities. This paper outlines the development of the geocollaboratory and describes the lessons learned with specific attention afforded the geographical nature of the collaboratory. Recommendations for mitigating challenges are proposed and future research opportunities are identified.
