Data were collected from a random sample of 740 college students who completed an anonymous online survey. Survey items assessed participants' motivations for consuming alcohol and the total number of drinks consumed on game day. With the exception of Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC), each of the TPB constructs was statistically significant in predicting alcohol consumption. Behavioral Intentions to drink alcohol on game day predicted behavior. Intentions, in turn, were predicted by Attitude Toward the Behavior and Subjective Norm constructs. The TPB proved useful in explaining alcohol use on game day with college students. However, the applicability of the PBC construct within the TPB model remains in question. Additional research with more effective PBC measures is needed before more definitive statements can be made concerning the TPB's efficacy in predicting college student alcohol consumption on game day.

Aims/Objectives: To examine an underserved population’s perspective on the importance of dental care and barriers they face to seek treatment. The effectiveness of compliance incentives, such as gift cards, was also examined. Methods: We conducted a survey study to gain insight of an underserved population’s perspective of barriers to care and correlated the reported barriers with the true reasons of missed appointments in our study cohort. Appointment compliance was also examined before and after implementation of gift card incentives, appoitment reminder letters and additional staff. Results: Most patients felt dental care was important/very important to them. However, no correlations were found between survey responses and true reasons for missing appointments. Eighty-seven percent of patients report having some form of financial...

The lesson covered animal, machinery, water, and general safety topics applicable to farming in Florida. A staggered pretest-posttest study design was followed whereby five schools received a multiple-choice pretest and posttest and the remainder of the schools (N = 10) received the posttest only. Results of the study showed a significant increase in the mean number of correct answers on the posttests compared to the pretests. There was no significant difference in the mean number of correct answers of those students who received the pretest and those students who had not, eliminating a "pretest" effect. This study fills an important gap in the literature by evaluating a farm safety curriculum offered in the elementary school setting. It also included migrant schoolchildren in the study population. It is strongly recommended that agricultural safety information be included into the health education curriculum of these elementary schools.

The results show a significant increase in bicycle helmet use among children, ages 5-13, in the post-law years compared with the pre-law years. Also, there has been a significant decline in the rates of bicycle related motor vehicle injuries among children in the post-law years compared with the pre-law years. Although there have been complementary educational and outreach activities in the county to support helmet use, it appears that the greatest increase in use occurred after the passage of the helmet law. It is recommended that educational efforts continue to sustain helmet use rates and decreases in injuries

However, the OPC screening rate is low in certain populations. To improve OPC screening rate, this study identified factors that are associated with having an OPC examination. Methods Participants with landlines and aged 25 years and older were recruited from six northern Florida counties. Bivariate and logistic regressions were used to predict the outcome of whether the participants had ever had an OPC examination as well as whether participants had ever heard of an OPC examination. Results Of 2260 participants with a mean age of 55.9 ± 15.0 years, the majority of participants never smoked (53.4%), self-identified as Whites (70.6%), and had some college or 2-year degree education (30.3%). Smokers were significantly less likely to have ever heard of an OPC examination than those who never smoked. Significant interaction between smoking status and race, ...
Today, teens are becoming sexually active at an earlier age and have more sex partners than teens... more Today, teens are becoming sexually active at an earlier age and have more sex partners than teens of previous generations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2000). In the United States during the 1960s it is estimated that 20% of males and 45% of females were virgins at age 19. However, by the 1980s, fewer than 20% of all 19 year-olds were virgins (Singh, 2000). Nationwide, 50% of all U.S. high school students have experienced sexual intercourse (CDC, 2000). Researchers estimate that by age 19, approximately 80% of all American teens have engaged in sexual intercourse. However, some research shows evidence of a slight decrease in this trend (CDC, 2000; Kaiser Family Foundation [KFF], 2000). According to recent CDC data, the percentage of high school students who experienced sexual intercourse declined from an estimated 54% in 1991 to 48% in 1997 (CDC, 2000). The 1999 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) estimates that 50% of the high school students surveyed had engaged...

The history of school health is reviewed and key events leading to modern school health practice are identified. The school is presented as a community and a learning environment in which essential public health services are delivered. Examples of contributions of the Florida Department of Health and the Florida Department of Education to the health and well-being of Florida's children are presented briefly. Florida Public Health Review, 2004; 1: 24-29 Public Health Defined Throughout history, recognition of public health and its relationship to the health of populations waxed and waned with current events. There was a concurrent inability of the public to define public health. Public health appears to be something that individuals understand intuitively, but have difficulty defining specifically, as evidenced by various definitions of public health found in the literature. The classic definition of public ...

Forty-two sexuality-relevant constructs were rated on thirty 7-point semantic differential scales. Means of the scale sum scores for men and women were compared using t tests. Among women the most favorably rated constructs were orgasm, vaginal sex, sexual intercourse, virginity, masturbation, oral sex, prochoice, pregnancy, erection, and heterosexual. The most negatively evaluated terms were date rape, sexual abuse, rape, sexual assault, HPV, and HIV/AIDS. For men, the most favorably rated constructs were sexual monogamy, virginity, orgasm, vaginal sex, and heterosexual. The most negatively evaluated terms were rape, HPV, date rape, and sexual abuse. There were statistically significant gender differences in the evaluation of 12 terms (p < .05). The evaluations assigned to 30 possible attributes suggest that some sexuality-related terms elicit strong visceral responses from university students. A discussion of the psychological and emotional impact of sexuality-related terms (i.e., connotative meanings) may be warranted whenever dictionary definitions (i.e., denotative meanings) are presented to students, other groups of learners, and persons in health care and other settings. Moreover, a practitioner's use of language may elicit connotatively different responses for women and men.

Of interest was whether evaluative indices were different for men and women, and for condom ever-users versus never-users. There was no sex difference in semantic evaluation of condom. However, the mean sum score of persons with prior condom experience reflected a significantly more positive rating compared to persons who were never-users. Because use of condoms is associated with an evaluative index that is statistically more favorable, encouraging sexually active young adults to try condoms may promote consistency of use, and thereby reduce undesired pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

This study determined middle school students' knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors related to bicycle helmet use. Six middle schools in Hillsborough County. Fla., served as the research settings. A pretested survey instrument was administered to students. Overall, 3,333 sixth and seventh graders responded. Results showed that most children owned a bicycle, 38.1 % owned a helmet, but only 15.8% wore a helmet the last time they rode a bike. Many students (49.7%) did not know or did not believe there was a bicycle helmet law in Florida. Predictors of helmet use were intention to use a helmet the next time one rides a bike, having a helmet, siblings' use of helmets, and friends' use of helmets.
