He argues that the tendency of our technological means is to overtake our ability to assign worthy goals for their application. His analysis of the possibility of forming a cosmopolitan order can be applied fruitfully in a posthuman context in which emerging technologies pose a challenge for constructing a posthuman political and moral order. In this context, the task is to maintain posthuman primacy. I show that there are several converging lines of thought and supportive social factors that underwrite the construction of a posthuman cosmopolitan order. I argue that self-consistent recursivity must be applied to the very procedural character of reflexive modernization of institutions and to the creation of posthuman beings that may participate in the creation of a future cosmopolitan social order.

It is my view that a deeper understanding of Ellul's method would show that his thought warrants serious reexamination. The purpose of this paper, then, is to attempt to describe Ellul's dialectical method. This is an especially difficult task inasmuch as Ellul himself has said so little about his own method. In an interview with Madaleine Garrigou Lagrange, Ellul has noted his reluctance to spell out his method for his readers in explicit terms: "I've never given an explanatory guide to my writing. I waited for readers to take the initiative and find their own explana tions."3 This attitude on the part of Ellul is, in my view, part and parcel of...

For some, there is continuity between the concepts of the human and the posthuman. This approach can be understood in the tradition of the great chain of being. Another approach posits a conceptual, and perhaps ontological, saltus (μετάβασις εἰς ἄλλο γένος). Here, the concept of the posthuman is taken to represent a radical departure from the realm of the human. After considering Lovejoy’s scheme of the great chain of being, Aristotle’s view of a conceptual saltus (μετάβασις εἰς ἄλλο γένος), and their historical significance, I will suggest how we might distinguish various concepts of the posthuman from the human by applying Rudolf Carnap’s approach to defining multiple concepts of space. We can thus create a linguistic convention that will assist in constructing useful conceptions of the human and posthuman – these can clarify the prospects of a posthuman future.

Where Kant saw only a peripheral role for love in the moral life, we will see how Kierkegaard places love at the center of human life in Works of Love. The leap of faith requires that every aspect of life be informed by love in response to God's love for us.

Taking its point of departure from a critical assessment of the ideology of compassionate conservatism, this work focuses on the conjunction of capitalism and community as an effective synthesis of the individualism of the traditional American dream and the enduring human need for community. After an initial consideration of the impulse toward compassion found in compassionate conservatism, Capitalism and Community in the Information Age asks whether it is possible for us to express our compassion in the market economy as well as in the non-market social sector. In this work, you will find that the theme of community was prominent in the work of the great management theorist, Peter Drucker. It further shows that management theory and moral theory converge in recognizing what Drucker called the “status” of workers. Amitai Etzioni’s socio-economics expresses this convergence very well. Russell Ackoff’s circular organization model then resolves what Drucker found to be an ineluctable conflict between the status of workers and the requirement of contemporary business organizations for hierarchical authority. Capitalism and Community in the Information Age outlines different models of high-performance organizations as illustrated in Eileen Applebaum’s treatment of the New American Workplace. We look at the possibility of coordinating public and private investment strategies aimed at developing and maintaining strong communities. In the concluding chapter we look at the idea of a caring organization. Finally, the European Dream as outlined by Jeremy Rifkin provides an overarching perspective for understanding the compatibility of capitalism and community as a social choice that transcends economic necessity. The fundamental claim of this work is that the development of an information economy brings with it the need for a social setting that is best characterized as a community. For, now the knowledge of workers is the most important asset companies possess. But the knowledge of workers is most effectively applied only in a setting of free self-direction. And this implies a democratization of the workplace. This kind of social setting is one that typically raises worker morale and productivity. If workers are allowed to share in the financial gains that follow upon a rise in productivity, we face the possibility of developing high-performance companies with high wages and good working conditions. As such, it may be that the knowledge economy will allow us to have our economic cake and eat it too.

Daryl J. Wennemann argues that the traditional concept of personhood may be fruitfully applied to the ethical challenge we face in a posthuman age. He draws upon Wilfrid Sellars’ treatment of the concept of a person within “the manifest image of man in the world.” Sellars proposed that we develop a stereoscopic view of reality that includes both a scientific understanding of the world and a meaningful place for persons living and acting in the world. Following Mary Anne Warren, Wennemann develops a distinction between two meanings of the term “human,” a biological meaning and a moral meaning, and maintains that all (biologically) human beings are persons. But, it is not necessarily the case that all persons must be (biologically) human. After drawing on a contemporary version of Kant’s distinction between a theoretical possibility and a real possibility, the book posits that biologically non-human persons like robots, computers, or aliens are a theoretical possibility but that we do not know if they are a real possibility. Finally, Wennemann describes an ethic of self-limitation for the posthuman age.
