Member Protection - Football NSW (original) (raw)

Member protection describes the practices that allow members to participate in a positive and safe sport environment.

Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO)

MPIOs are the point of contact at clubs, associations and referee branches for participants and parents with member protection related enquiries or concerns, particularly for anyone considering making a complaint.

Football NSW requires all Clubs, Associations and Referee Branches to have a registered MPIO.

MPIO Contact Details

It is important that club members are able to contact the club MPIO. Contact details for the club MPIO/s should be available to members and clearly displayed on the club website and included in club parent information and newsletters.

Role of the MPIO

As the primary point of contact for member protection enquiries, the MPIO should demonstrate approachability, strong communication skills, and a comprehensive understanding of the club’s structure, committee, policies, child safeguarding practices, and requirements such as the Working with Children Check. Many clubs now have multiple MPIOs to provide a greater level of support to members.

MPIOs are impartial and do not investigate complaints. The responsibility for managing complaints lies with the club. In instances where a conflict of interest arises, the Club President or Committee may appoint an independent person or external party to oversee the complaint management process.

Support for MPIOs

The MPIO holds a vital role within every club and is frequently called upon to provide information and support to members. It is therefore essential that MPIOs are afforded the necessary support to enable them to do their role effectively.

Football NSW places the mental health and well-being of its MPIOs as a top priority. If you need support, please refer to the following:
