Roman Core Community Survey Science Pitch (original) (raw)

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, NASA's next flagship observatory, is planned for launch in late 2026. The Roman Mission requests the astronomical community's input for the purpose of initiating the community-led definition of the Roman Space Telescope's Core Community Surveys (CCSs). Combined, these surveys are anticipated to use the majority of the observing time during Roman’s first five years. The cosmology and exoplanet science requirements for these surveys leave significant parameter space available to define the observational strategies (filters, depth, cadence, etc.) in a way that will enable a broad range of other astrophysical investigations.

This form is for members of the community to provide information on science drivers and the requirements they place on the design of the Core Community Surveys via a short, one to two paragraph 'science pitch' and an associated questionnaire.

Submissions were originally requested by Feb 17, 2023.

This form remains open for those wishing to provide the Roman Core Community Survey definition committees with details on additional science investigations they would like to see enabled by one or more of the Core Community Surveys.

Please note that as of January 2024, the

Roman Core Community Survey definition committees are active and working towards defining the surveys. The committees are anticipating completing their review of existing community input (previously submitted science pitches and white papers) by early May 2024, after which they will move onto exploring the impact of various observational strategies on different science investigations. The definition committees will be providing reports with their recommendations for observational strategies for the surveys to the Roman project by November 2024. Thus, the earlier you provide a science pitch submission, the more likely it can be fully incorporated into the committee's process.
