Research paper thumbnail of Employee Selection Process: An Approach for Effective Organizational Performance

International journal of social science and human research, Oct 19, 2023

Adopting a proportionate stratified random sampling technique, 255 employees were profiled amongst ten (10) banks in Lagos State. Guided by the Human capital Theory, data gathered by this cross-sectional survey was analysed through standardized multiple regression. Three selection process variablesapplicant interview, cognitive ability test, and personality questionnairewere regressed on organizational performance. A preliminary investigation revealed the absence of multicollinearity in the correlation matrix. The ANOVA table indicates that the proposed model is significant, F(3, 251) = 68.446, p < 0.001. Applicant interview made the most unique, and statistically significant contribution to the prediction of organizational performance. This outcome empirically supports that employee selection process cannot be jettisoned when measuring organizational performance. This paper showcases a unique deviation from extant literature which had used market share value, customer base, financial strengths, annual returns, and so forth as parameters to measure organizational performance. Hence, theoretically, this outcome bridges the lacuna that exist in organization performance literature. Practically, the paper suggests to industry experts that the best talents needed to achieve organizational excellence are preferably selected through interview. Apart from the expensive nature of stratified random sampling, this paper is limited by its inability to differentiate between in-person interview and virtual interview. Future study may consider the various forms of interviews to strengthen the outcome of this paper.

The neglect of the agricultural sector resulted from labour migration and lack of political will in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which has severe implications on agricultural output. This study, however, investigated the nexus among labour, political will and agricultural production in SSA from 1998 – 2018 using the dynamic System – GMM estimation technique. The idea of a power shift to institutions and organisations below the state, and its implication for democratic governance within states, has been used to explore an associative basis for democracy. In this article we argue that it is no longer adequate to conceptualise democracy as territory-bound. The rise of new classes, the new identities they form, and the new spaces they foster, challenge the sovereignty of the modern nation-state in a novel way. We use moral geographies and tangential politics as a model to explain the changing power configurations, brought about by transnational networking of individuals and groups, collaborating on different issues, to challenge the disempowering hegemony of the state.

The study used an ex-post facto panel research design. The data for the study was collected from the published financial statements of sampled banks. The study's dependent variable is market capitalization, a proxy of firm value, while the independent variables are dividend payout and agency cost, respectively. The data estimation was conducted using the panel data technique. The findings showed that the dividend payout and agency cost effects on firm value are positive and negative but statistically significant and insignificant. In contrast, the joint effects of dividend payout and agency cost on a firm's value are statistically insignificant. This result implies that dividend payout has a unique effect (direct effect) on firm value but does not moderate the effect of agency cost on firm value in Nigerian DMBs...

The model is run with recent data for Germany's power sector and for different types of gas-fired power plants. The result is twofold. First, the paper achieves a more realistic value by improving on existing models: it models electricity and gas prices as a two-dimensional stochastic process, each component consisting of the sum of a seasonal pattern and a mean-reverting process; it uses high granularity by modelling hourly time-steps; and it incorporates power plant ramping times and costs. Second, it compares two types of power plant models, one with daily and one with hourly operating decisions, and thereby quantifies the value of a plant's intraday flexibility. The hourly model replicates operators' and investors' decision making accurately. This is evidenced by the fact that the results trace current major developments like the recent decline and comeback of gas-fired generation in Germany. The paper contributes to a better understanding of the choices operators and investors face in current electricity markets. In the absence of large scale storage solutions flexible supply of electricity, as provided by gas, is important in the transition to renewable energies in Germany and across Europe.

However, energy consumption also grew significantly over the same period. Thus we seek to establish the directional causality between energy consumption and economic growth in Bolivia using secondary annual data for the period of 1971 to 2010. The Granger-causality tests indicate that there is an unidirectional causality that runs from economic growth to energy consumption with no feedback. The study, therefore, recommends that policies meant to manage growing energy demand can be instituted without obstructing growth in Bolivia. Data were gathered through the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) tool called analytic hierarchy process (AHP) based questionnaire administered to practicing entrepreneurs in Lagos State, Nigeria. The population of the study consists of all the firms (mainly small and medium scale businesses) registered by Lagos Chamber of Commerce, totalling 1766 at the time of this study. The sample size was calculated through Yamane formula, while entrepreneurs managing the sampled firms were the respondents carefully selected for the study through a random sampling procedure. Data collected were analysed through descriptive statistics and analytic hierarchy process procedures for eliciting the consistency ratio, consistency index, Lambda Max, local and global priority values for an effective policy decision. The priorities were established in line with the AHP framework using pairwise comparisons and judgment of entrepreneurs. The results revealed the preference of entrepreneurial orientation dimension that influenced business performance most based on pairwise experiences and trade-off of different attributes. This study explores the application of AHP methodology for measuring complex entrepreneurial decision-making process for enhancing business performance. Thus, the AHP revealed a potential research method in computing weights and chasing MCDM process.

The Nigerian banks were characterised by poor capital base to foster economic development and growth, hence the need for consolidation. This study was carried out to ascertain whether bank consolidation exercise in Nigeria had improved accessibility of finance to SMEs in Nigeria or not. This study uses empirical analysis (Ordinary Least Square). This study, therefore, submits that the government should evolve a workable policy at directing banks to channel finance to SMEs so that bank can play an active developmental role to achieve economic growth and development in Nigeria.
