This week, IFA’s Market Intelligence service visited IFA member OCP Group to learn more about its phosphate operations, including mining, processing, and port loading. The visit consisted of three days in Morocco seeing OCP’s operations, learning about decarbonization and sustainability projects, and strengthening relationships with the OCP Nutricrops market intelligence team. Starting in Khourigba, the team toured OCP’s largest phosphate rock mining operation, visiting the excavation site, beneficiation facilities, and logistics infrastructure. The team then visited the Jorf Lasfar processing complex, shipping facilities and loading operations. A heartfelt thank you for the OCP team for their warm reception, invaluable learning opportunities, and fruitful discussions. This year’s theme, ‘Navigating the future: safety first!’, resonates deeply with us as our products are among the most traded commodities worldwide. With shipping as the backbone of international trade, we recognize the vital role it plays in ensuring the safe transport of goods across the globe. The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) annual effort to raise awareness for the vital contributions of shipping continues this year, with an initiative to light up emblematic landmarks in blue. Join us in celebrating by sharing your support and lighting up your own spaces, or simply spreading the word about the crucial work of seafarers and maritime workers who keep our global supply chains running. Yesterday morning, APCO and the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) convened global leaders from the public, private and research sectors for a vital discussion on how innovation can drive food systems transformation in the face of climate change and geopolitical instability. Key insights from the conversation included: 1. Land Use & Food Insecurity: Participants emphasized the urgent need to address land degradation and desertification as root causes of food insecurity. Improving soil health and sustainable land management are critical to mitigating climate impacts and boosting food production. 2. Rethinking Agricultural Subsidies & Financing: Current policies and subsidies fail to support climate-smart practices. There is a call to reallocate public funds and drive private investment into regenerative agriculture and solutions that benefit farmers and ecosystems alike. 3. Innovation & Technology: While emerging technologies like precision farming and regenerative practices hold promise, obstacles such as lack of connectivity and tailored financing for smallholder farmers remain significant. Bridging this gap will require increased investment and multi-stakeholder collaboration. 4. Holistic, Cross-Sector Approaches: The importance of cross-sector partnerships was a recurring theme, with leaders urging collaboration between the agriculture, energy and mining industries to foster a nature-positive future. Additionally, the dialogue underscored the need to engage farmers in shaping the solutions to ensure policies and innovations are grounded in real-world needs. 5. Actionable Next Steps: Participants committed to exploring innovative financing mechanisms, improving stakeholder engagement and continuing the dialogue through dedicated forums. From tackling food waste to developing sustainable alternatives in agriculture, there was a shared commitment to finding scalable solutions. This discussion highlighted the complexity of food systems transformation and reinforced the critical role that innovation and collaboration will play in ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for all. Thank you to all our wonderful participants: Alain-Richard DONWAHI, Daniela Vega, Cary Fowler, Rohitesh Dhawan, Arne Cartridge, Tim Faveri, Jeremy Oppenheim, Martien van Nieuwkoop, Krysta Harden, Natasha Santos, Leonardus Vergütz, Blas L. For our final event at UN Climate Week 2024 in NYC, IFA was pleased to partner with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development for the event 'Agri-food value chains for nature and climate’, a sequel to our COP28 roundtable last year in Dubai. Today’s roundtable discussed the design and implementation of scalable solutions and pathways that could foster new value chain cooperation on climate and nature. Moderators Alzbeta Klein, CFA (IFA) and Emeline Fellus (WBCSD) brought business leaders together for a structured discussion around integration strategies and cross-sector partnerships between farmers, input companies, food producers and retailers. They focused on nature-based carbon credits, customer-centric approaches, and measurements of success. By fostering dialogue and collaboration among business leaders, we strive to develop actionable solutions that drive meaningful change across the agri-food value chain. The road to sustainability is complex, but together, we can create a more resilient and sustainable future. Thank you to William O'Neill, Svein Tore Holsether, Dean Banks, Arnoud van den Berg, Jim Andrew, Sally Smith, Gilles Tisserand, and Tim Faveri for another constructive dialogue. #ClimateWeekNYC Alzbeta Klein, CFA | Patrick Heffer | Yvonne Harz-Pitre | Margot Clifford Laguette | Claire Newell (Chart.PR) | Annie COHEN | Mariana Borges - We are proud to be partnering with APCO for our second fringe event at #ClimateWeekNYC.
Today, industry and global leaders are convening for a high-level roundtable on innovation, climate progress, and food systems transformation. Amidst geopolitical disruptions and economic uncertainties, innovative solutions—decarbonization, AI, and digitalization—are at the forefront of addressing humanity's most pressing challenges: food security and climate action. Co-hosted by APCO and International Fertilizer Association (IFA), this event brings together global leaders from governments, NGOs, and businesses to discuss the latest technological and policy breakthroughs that can drive a sustainable future. The discussion will focus on: + Maximizing the impact of innovations across sectors + Policies and investments necessary for supporting sustainable development + Ethical and societal considerations in times of poly-crises Stay tuned as we will be sharing insights and key takeaways from today’s discussions on how cross-sectoral collaboration can help address these interconnected global challenges.#ClimateAction #InnovationForChange #Sustainability #AI #FoodSecurity #CollaborationForImpact #UNGA79 - 🌍IFA at Climate Week Today, IFA and Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) will be hosting a two-part panel discussion on “The Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils: Improving Food Security at the Nexus of Climate, Land Degradation and Biodiversity”. Bringing together senior stakeholders from governments, multilateral organizations, NGOs, UN officials and members of the private sector, this two-part panel will focus on how to best address the mismatch between food demand and production, and how to build a resilient food system grounded in diverse, nutritious and climate-adapted crops grown in healthy soils. Agriculture and food security must be at the center of plans to mitigate and adapt against climate change, restore degraded lands and protect biodiversity. This event will be an opportunity for leaders and stakeholders across the agricultural supply chain to discuss best practices and innovative approaches that help inspire collaboration and deliver on these major planetary challenges.#ClimateWeekNYC 🌱Alzbeta Klein, CFA | Patrick Heffer | Yvonne Harz-Pitre | Margot Clifford Laguette | Claire Newell (Chart.PR) | Annie COHEN | Mariana Borges

After a highly successful first collaboration between IFA's Sustainable Fertilizer Academy (SFA) and the Federal University of UFMT - Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, we are excited to announce the launch of a second round of the program, which is designed to reach an even more diverse audience from within the agronomy community in Brazil. This unique program involves a selected series of classes from the SFA's curriculum for university students and sustainability and agronomy professionals, that align with their specific professional and educational backgrounds. Each class will deepen participants' knowledge on sustainability within agronomy and the fertilizer industry, helping them to make a positive impact in their respective fields. We’ve received over 1,600 registrations for the program, which we’ll be rolling out in two phases. The first phase begins on September 23rd, 2024, and will run until December 27th, 2024. A second phase will follow in January 2025. The SFA platform has a dedicated section on this initiative to ensure that the learning experience is clear and targeted. We wish all our students and participants the best as they embark on this learning journey.
