The NUWARD SMR is targeting to replace old high CO2-emitting coal, fuel, oil and gas plants around the world as well as offering the capability of supporting other usages such as hydrogen production, urban and district heating or desalination. Based on proven PWR technology, it is a 340MWe plant with two reactors of 170MWe each. Led by the NUWARD company, the project relies on the skilled and valued contributions of EDF, CEA, Naval Group, TechnicAtome, Framatome and Tractebel.

• Together with EDF, NUWARD stands fully committed in its intent to market a Generation 3 SMR product to meet the growing demand of electric utilities and energy-intensive industries, in Europe and beyond. 💡 Considering the evolving #SMR market dynamics and the learnings drawn from the development of NUWARD SMR since 2019, the EDF Group has proactively decided to pivot its SMR product strategy and to embark on a new chapter. 🧱 To address the needs expressed by the market timely and competitively, EDF and NUWARD shift the SMR product strategy towards the development of a design based on proven technology bricks only.   🌐 A look back at the Annual International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna 🇦🇹 Last week, the IAEA General Conference brought together industry leaders and innovators. A highlight was the side event organized by EURATOM on September 17, 2024, focusing on “The European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).” Launched on February 6, 2024, the European Industrial Alliance aims to foster collaboration among stakeholders in #SMR technology. Its goal is to accelerate the development, demonstration, and deployment of SMR power plants across Europe by the early 2030s. To achieve it, several technical working groups have been established, focusing on: 👉 Industrial applications 👉 Financing 👉 Technology and R&D&I 👉 Supply Chain 👉 Nuclear Safety & Safeguards 👉 Fuel Cycle & Waste Management 👉 Public EngagementVakisasai Ramany, EDF Senior Vice-President for New Nuclear Development and Chairman of the Technical Working Group on Supply Chain of the European Industrial Alliance, participated in the discussions of the side event organized by EURATOM. He addressed key challenges and emerging opportunities for enhancing the European supply chain to support SMR manufacturing and deployment both in Europe and globally over the next decade 🇪🇺 🎙 Vakisasai said “The Supply Chain technical working group will succeed if SMR/AMR developers and suppliers establish clearer mutual expectations.”NUWARD shares this view and is committed to building a strong European supply chain, which is at the heart of its industrial strategy 🤝 🎙 Marco Brugmans from the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) emphasized the importance of European collaboration to support common licensing approaches. He cited the NUWARD initiative as an example, highlighting early feedback on our standardised design from 6 European safety authorities (the Joint Early Rreview initiative). 🎯 The Alliance aims to develop technology roadmaps by the end of 2024 and to establish a strategic action plan in the first quarter of 2025.   NUWARD was represented at Platform Global 2024, an annual international forum dedicated investment and change in digital infrastructure markets, which took place in Antibes (France). 🤝 This event brought together data centres investors, industry leaders and IA specialists to explore investment opportunities and address challenges related to energy transition and the impact of AI on data centers. 📈 With the rising demand for digital services and AI applications, electricity consumption by data centers is expected to soar. Many data centers are now powered by renewable energy sources, and companies are increasingly investing in low-carbon energy to reduce their carbon footprint 🌍 “Every ChatGPT request costs ten times as much energy as a Google search” (1). By way of example, by 2030 in the United States alone, data centers are projected to consume around 35 gigawatts of power annually, up from 17 gigawatts in 2022.   📅 NUWARD participera le 23 septembre au workshop organisé par la Sfen - Société française d'énergie nucléaire et l’Association française des économistes de l’Energie sur le thème « Quelle place pour le nucléaire dans le mix énergétique en Europe ? Les SMRs, une nouvelle donne pour le nucléaire ? » 🌐 La sécurité énergétique et la décarbonation sont au cœur des enjeux du monde de demain. 🎯 En 2023, afin d’accélérer cette transition énergétique vers le Net Zéro, 16 pays européens* membres de l’Alliance du nucléaire se sont fixé l’objectif d’atteindre 150 GW de capacité nucléaire dans l’Union Européenne d’ici 2050. Au sein de l'UE, l’énergie nucléaire représente aujourd’hui 100 GW de puissance. Pour atteindre les 150 GW, les ministres européens ont indiqué qu’il était nécessaire de : ▪ poursuivre l’exploitation des réacteurs existants, ▪ construire 30 à 45 nouveaux grands réacteurs ▪ développer des petits réacteurs modulaires (#SMR) 👉 Les SMRs peuvent-ils favoriser l’accélération du déploiement du nucléaire en Europe et contribuer à l’atteinte des 150 GW de capacité nucléaire en 2050 ? C’est à cette question que Renaud Crassous, Président Exécutif de NUWARD, tentera de répondre lors de la deuxième table ronde du Workshop. • ⚡ Flamanville 3 has diverged: France’s first EPR reactor enters the production phase 📆 On Tuesday, September 3rd, at 3:54 PM, a crucial milestone was reached by EDF with the “first nuclear reaction” of the Flamanville #EPR reactor. 📈 This divergence marks the beginning of the progressive power ramp-up of the EPR. Currently at 0.2% of its nominal power, the reactor will gradually reach 25% of its capacity by the end of autumn 2024. 🎯 In the coming weeks, teams will be fully mobilized to enable this power increase in successive stages. Once 25% is reached, the Flamanville EPR reactor will be connected to the national grid. This is an important step that will contribute to France’s energy independence and #decarbonization.NUWARD warmly congratulates all the teams involved, who will continue to carry out tests and trials on over 1500 safety criteria throughout the reactor’s power ramp-up, in close collaboration with the Nuclear Safety Authority (Autorité de sûreté nucléaire (ASN)). These learnings will fuel the NUWARD’s Small Modular Reactor development. **** ⚡ Flamanville 3 a divergé : le premier réacteur EPR de France entre en phase de production 📆 Le mardi 3 septembre, à 15h54, la première divergence a été acquise. Il s'agit d'une étape importante des opérations de démarrage. Cette première réaction nucléaire marque le début de la montée en puissance, par paliers successifs, de l’EPR de Flamanville. 📈 Actuellement à 0,2% de sa puissance nominale, le réacteur atteindra progressivement, d’ici la fin de l’automne 2024, 25% de sa capacité. 🎯 Dans les semaines à venir, les équipes seront pleinement mobilisées pour permettre cette montée en puissance par paliers successifs. Une fois les 25% atteint, le réacteur EPR de Flamanville sera raccordé au réseau électrique national. Une étape importante qui contribuera à l’indépendance énergétique de la France et à la décarbonation de son économie. NUWARD félicite l’ensemble des équipes mobilisées, qui poursuivront les essais et tests sur plus de 1500 critères de sûreté tout au long de la montée en puissance du réacteur, en étroite collaboration avec l’Autorité de sûreté nucléaire (ASN). • 🌐 EDF and Edison, Ansaldo Energia, Ansaldo Nucleare and Federacciai are collaborating the development of Italian nuclear energy and more specifically on the SMR developed by NUWARD. 📄 A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to boost the #competitiveness and #decarbonisation of the Italian steel industry by developing nuclear energy. This cooperation focuses on the Italian industrial sector and includes the following key points: ⚡ 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: As part of the collaboration, there will be an assessment of the possibility of a long-term agreement between EDF and Federacciai for the supply of nuclear energy by means of the interconnection already operating between Italy and France. 🏗 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗡𝘂𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀: The companies involved in this MoU will jointly explore investment opportunities in new nuclear initiatives. Nuclear power will be a strategic and much needed component in achieving such ambitious goals, providing the industry with a secure and environmentally friendly energy supply.” said Antonio Gozzi, President of Federacciai. Italy is the only G7 country without its own nuclear power plants. The government plans to restart Italy’s nuclear energy by introducing legislation to support investment in small modular reactors to achieve Net Zero by 2050 🌍.   The 5th meeting of the International NUWARD Advisory Board (INAB) was held in Helsinki 🇫🇮 Experts and partners of NUWARD gathered at Fortum’s Finnish premises for the INAB. The event featured: 👉 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: we discussed the latest industry and market dynamics 👉 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 (𝐉𝐄𝐑): insights from the second phase led with 6 European Safety Authorities 👉 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐔𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲: presentation of the shift of our product strategy towards the development of a design based on proven technology bricks only to address the needs expressed by the market timely and competitively Additionally, we visited Loviisa, the PWR nuclear power plant operational since 1977. 🎯 The INAB’s seasoned operators and senior representatives provided valuable advice, fuelling NUWARD development. A dynamic group from NUWARD, Edvance and Framatome came together in Lyon as OneTeam during #RunforPlanet, the first eco-designed race in France. This event organized by Ethics Event was dedicated to raising awareness about ecological, social, and ethical challenges. This event provided a unique opportunity for colleagues and partners to bond beyond office walls. Whether they’ve run side by side or cheered each other on, the shared experience strengthened their sense of unity. 🌳 By participating in this event, NUWARD contributes also to reforestation by supporting the Planète Urgence association. Run for Planet - France isn’t just about environmental consciousness, it’s also about physical well-being.   🌐 To achieve Net Zero by 2050, we will not only need to electrify energy usages, but also develop other low-carbon energy vectors such as hydrogen. 📈 In 2021, the global #hydrogen demand reached 94 million tons. And the demand of hydrogen is expected to increase by 50% until 2050. Indeed, hydrogen is essential in chemical industries, for the desulfurization of petroleum products and for the heat production in industrial buildings and refineries. ⚠ In 2020, 95% of the hydrogen consumed globally was derived from fossil fuels. Grey hydrogen is produced by steam methane reforming, which is a chemical reaction between steam and methane. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝟏 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐎𝟐 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏. 🎯 Therefore, the production of low carbon hydrogen is a key challenge for the energy transition. It can be produced by the electrolysis of water, using low-carbon electricity and heat. In the future NUWARD #SMR could enable to drastically reduce the CO2 emissions from hydrogen production while meeting the increasing demands of industrial and transportation sectors. 👉 How ? NUWARD SMR could participate to the production of low-carbon hydrogen by being connected to either a low or a high-temperature electrolyser. The former uses water at temperatures below 100 °C, while the latter uses temperatures exceeding 700 °C. To power a low-temperature electrolyser, the NUWARD SMR would supply exclusively low carbon electricity. Whereas to power a high-temperature electrolyser, it would produce both low carbon electricity and heat 🌍 #sustainable
