- Dr. Tedjani Mesbahi ✨ IT ONLY TAKES ONE POINT🚀 Meet Cubik, the innovative creation of Hugo Gounon and Martin Matter, second-year electrical engineering students (GE2) at INSA Strasbourg. As part of their TIPE (Personal Initiative Project), they've engineered a simple yet fascinating cube that can balance perfectly on one of its corners! 🔧 The Tech Behind Cubik: Cubik is powered by an Arduino Nano, equipped with two Nidec 24h brushless motors and an MPU-6050 gyroscope and accelerometer. This combination measures angular velocity and acceleration across three axes. Using a complementary filter, the angles on the X and Y axes are calculated to maintain balance. ⚙️ The Balancing Act: To keep Cubik balanced, the principle of the reaction wheel is employed, rooted in Newton's Third Law (action-reaction). Flexibility provided by industrial actors presents many advantages, in terms of energy and power density, but comes with several challenges. In this thesis, we investigate and optimize the flexibility potential of industrial plants and its valorization. We start by proposing a methodology to quantify the flexibility potential of a cryogenic air separation unit. This results in the identification of the available power ramping capability within this process depending on its feasible space of operation. Second, we model the participation strategy of an industrial asset in a multi-market environment with renewable sourcing through robust optimization and a rolling horizon algorithm. From this we can extract the effective impact of uncertain quantities on the production cost of low carbon hydrogen. This multi-market strategy is also used to confirm the results obtained from the first part of the work by running the same simulation for an air separation unit. Finally, we continue using this methodology to assess how investing in battery storage would enable the flexible operation of an air separation unit in such an uncertain environment.

- Philippe Dewolfs Almost at the same time as the publication of the report on the Chaire CoPack study carried out in France, the 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘂𝗺 and Closed Loop Partners are publishing another #study, carried out in North America. Other continent, different methods, same conclusions ! The study evaluated the #disintegration of over 23,000 units of #certified #compostable #products at 10 commercial composting facilities across the U.S. This study deployed two methods to test compostable products in the field: ✅ The 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗯𝗮𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 involved using a mesh bag to contain the tested compostable packaging during the field test. ✅ The second method, known as the 𝗱𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱, involves mixing in the tested packaging directly into fresh non-contaminated feedstock. On average, compostable plastic products broke down 98% by surface area, and compostable fiber products 83%, after 90 days (mesh bag method). 💡 On the other hand, the disintegration study (logically) showed significantly higher disintegration under the dose method compared to the mesh bag method, further improving the results of the mesh bag campaign. 💡 The study also highlights something we keep saying repeatedly: 𝗮𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗮𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 of good composting. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 🔴 This comprehensive study has provided valuable insights into the disintegration of certified compostable packaging in real-world composting facilities. 🔴 The findings offer strong evidence for the efficacy of certified compostable packaging as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics. - BAG-INTEL Today we shed light on another BAG-INTEL project partner - INSA Rouen Normandie, French “Grande Ecole,” which is a part of the Groupe INSA network of engineering schools. With strong links to the industry, its primary mission is to provide national and international excellence in engineering education, scientific research, industrial development, and training. Its Laboratory of Mechanics of Normandy (Laboratoire de Mécanique de Normandie - LMN) with sites in Rouen and Le Havre, contributes to BAG INTEL's #risk #analysis activities, which will support #customs #inspection #decisionmaking. The mainstream research in the LMN concerns uncertainties, namely risk analysis and modelling, reliability, studies on variabilities and errors, and modelling the uncertainty. The activities of the LMN are based on a continuous flow coming from data collection, data analysis for hierarchization and selection of the most significant aspect, modelling under uncertainty, and optimization under uncertainty and reliability. The LMN has competencies in experimental aspects, data analysis, deterministic and stochastic modelling, numerical analysis, metamodels, optimization, and reliability paired with strong connections with the industry.
