Michelin and MICHELIN ResiCare: a major step forward for bioeconomy! Michelin has announced a groundbreaking initiative: the construction of the world’s largest industrial demonstration unit for producing the bio-sourced molecule 5-HMF (5-hydroxymethylfurfural) — a key component in green chemistry. 🔹 Located at the Osiris platform in Peage-de-Roussillon, France. 🔹 Investment of €60 million, partially subsidized by ADEME (France) and CBE JU (Europe). 🔹 Annual production capacity of 3,000 metric tons. 🔹 Creating approximately 30 direct jobs, operations are set to begin in 2026. This pioneering industrial-scale unit represents an essential milestone for sustainable chemistry, significantly reducing dependence on fossil-fuel-based products. Already implemented in ResiCare resins, the 5-HMF molecule is helping to reduce operator and consumer exposure to harmful substances. As a versatile building block, 5-HMF offers a sustainable alternative to harmful components currently used in the industry. The CERISEA initiative, bringing together 12 partners and 2 affiliated entities from industry and research, aims to: ✅ Tackle the technical challenges of a safe and sustainable industrial and bio-based production of 5-HMF ✅ Build the first European value chain and the world’s first factory able to produce up to 3000 tons per year ✅ Test 5-HMF in its potential applications (#araminolic resins, crop science, functionalized biopolymers, functionalized compounds, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, plasticizers…)MICHELIN ResiCare is the coordinator of the Cerisea Project and will be fully involved from the feedstock supply and the production of 5-HMF to the finding of its market applications and the valorization of its co-products.
