No posts since 2K6... Anyone here still volunteer or work at FG? I just started volunteering there a month or two ago. Saw someone browsing lj and thought I'd check to see if there was a community :)

Take a good look around... Free Geek is probably the busiest, most prosperous and most well run that I have ever seen it. We are finally ahead of the curve.
Take a good look around, because this isn't going to last forever...but at least now we know we can do it!

Going to California! Don't miss me too much! Hello everyone.
I will be gone for the next week or so. In California. Possibly with limited intarwebness.
But I am still eager to spend a summer making Free Geek perfect again. So see you in June for more Free Geek-perfection making.

12 trucks? Did 12 trucks really come in from various neighborhood groups on Earth Day? Were they full sized trucks? The mind boggles.

Perhaps TMI I have noticed since I am not at Free Geek four times a week anymore, that my nose is no longer as...boogerish. They seemed to really pile up from being there.
Just thought everyone was dying to know that.

Jurassic equipment question. Heya.
About that Kaypro II unit we got in yesterday...have we thought about selling that to a collector, to fund more Free Geekery, rather than having it go into the waiting pile for the Museum?
Like as not, we just might get another one. Or get an Osborne. If we don't already have said Osborne.
It's just a thought.
Current Mood: curious

Let me state for the record that I think much of the excitement around ubuntu is irrational exuberance.
Not that I can't still use livejournal from Lynx...

Updates? After having been gone all of two days, I am wondering how things are doing.
Hopefully, Free Geek is REALLY REALLY busy leading into the new year. I am talking about glaciers of ice.
Update me, people.

Next Free Geek question! So, while we are on the wonderful topic of Free Geek and GTKY...
How long is the longest you have ever been at Free Geek? If so, were you working for all of it? Or was some of it just happening to have been there.
I don't know for certain, but I imagine there is a couple of times I have spent 12 hours or so there. I have never spent the night.

Somewhat off topic but may be of interest (pdxlug meeting tonight) The Portland Linux Users Group (pdxlug) not to be confused with the Portland Linux Unix Group (PLUG) is having a meeting tonight at The Fireside Coffee Lodge on Powell @ 7PM. Literally the next building over if you ever worked at 800Support/CyberRep/ACS. Google maps tells me that it is about 0.8 miles away from Free Geek, and I will be driving if anyone wants a ride.
Basically we sit and talk about techie stuff, whatever we want to talk about. It is friendly to less experienced users, but at 2 and a half years of practical Linux Experience I can feel like a newb at the meetings from time to time. It is a great place to pick people's brains. There is a wealth of knowledge to be had. Authors, programmers, NASA network admin, member of well ranked defcon hacker team, even one of Linus's lieutenants have shown up to meetings.

Who wants maintainer privledges? I just gave them to glowing_fish because he seems trustworthy.
Oh about when I said something about a page with pictures, and names I meant something like this. But for regular volunteers rather than staff. You probably know lots of people who are at free geek all the time, but don't show up on that page. Blaine for example. Of course not everybody wants fame, so the idea was just for people who do, or who don't mind being easy to identify, or want to convince others that they are a fish. I want fame. My name teknotus kind of sounds like "take notice" doesn't it?

Who the hell are you So I have trouble matching up names to faces at Free Geek. Anyone feel like conspiring with me to take pictures of people, and match them up with the names on their government ID's, and their iterweb ID's? The BBQ might be a good place to do it. Anyone know anything about this? It seems it will be dropping a lot of open source activists off at the BBQ. I think I want to be one of them. I should remember to bring a camera. OSU open source labs servers should stand still so that the stupid digital camera delay doesn't cause a problem like it did when I took multiple pictures of Lance Armstrong across the street from my house, and in all of them I missed the nearly perfect shot I had setup. So yeah who are people.

Could I be your projector? As some of you may know, projectors are requested quite often from Free Geek.
Next time I get one of those requests, I might decide to offer to follow someone around, pointing out that they probably wear that hat because they are self-conscious about being bald.

Official Notice! As a very extremely official notice, it should be pointed out that this community does not in any way reflect the official views of Free Geek management, mostly because we aren't sure who the Free Geek management is, and if we ever figure out who they are, I am not so sure that they could figure out their views, official or not.
Mostly this place is for flame wars that we wouldn't allow on the lists.
Haha, just kidding. Play friendly. Have fun. Don't drink the Sparks until AFTER 7 PM.
