Prova Brasil, which will be administered to primary students every three years, is the country's first census-level assessment of student learning, and forms the cornerstone of a drive to improve basic education quality and establish a results framework for measuring learning outcomes. The aim of this study has been to promote discussion rather than to provide definitive solutions. Beyond the limited set of specific practices observed and reported upon in the course of this small study, a wide variety of good practices are being implemented in Brazilian school districts, day after day, as teachers, principals, education officials, and parents each make their indispensable contributions to student le...

It is written for education stakeholders and policy makers in Timor-Leste, including government officials, politicians, educators, parents, Timor-Leste's donor partners and Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) active in the country. Because the report is aimed at those who are already familiar with the education system in Timor-Leste, it will not attempt to describe the education system, its history, or the issues, with one important exception, that policy makers and stakeholders are currently confronting. One issue in Timor-Leste, however, merits special mention in the context of this analysis. Approximately 30 percent of primary school age children in Timor-Leste are not enrolled in primary school because they never started school or have dropped out. This study assesses the reading ability only of those children who are in school. The findings show significant problems with reading a...

The purpose was to identify the main strengths and vulnerabilities of this federal initiative. The practical application of an education policy often can generate effects and / or reactions that were not foreseen originally at the time of drawing. These effects and / or reactions were also objects of investigation in this research. This report is divided into four sections - including the introduction. The second section performs the exercise of the indicators as they relate to RAP with the 28 guidelines of commitment and practices that have been developed by municipalities for meeting the goals established by the Federal Government. The third section describes the main results of field research, analyzing three aspects of the RAP implementation in municipalities. This third section is inte...

together to transform how schools foster future generations of global
citizens. CSUSA and AiA piloted a curriculum, titled Attitude is Altitude,
in select middle and high schools to cultivate critical thinking and
interpersonal skills deemed most important for success in the 21st
century.
In order to explore the impact of the program, two validated instruments
were administered to measure changes in self‐esteem and trust. A content assessment was also conducted to investigate the skills
learned through the curriculum. Preliminary findings indicate that the curriculum had a significant impact on student self‐esteem. After the program, on average students reported being more comfortable with
who they are and how they feel about themselves in relation to their peers. The program also seems to affect student motivation in school. After completing the program, students were less likely to get
discouraged in school. Due to the sample size and issues of fidelity of implementation, results are not widely generalizable. However, findings underscore the value of the curriculum as it relates to the relevance of the topics and the degree to which concepts are internalized to promote greater social and emotional understanding.
