It addresses the lack of demographic diversity among doctoral students in education. Emphasis is on researcher positionality and building relationships with stakeholders in a service-learning practicum. Research fellows design projects around literacy and social action, negotiate with stakeholders, and provide service. We use autoethnographic methods to articulate how Fellows, CDF Freedom School staff, and faculty collaborate. We offer suggestions for conducting research that can lead to meaningful, systemic change.

We particularly work with attendees to examine instances of professional shame that arise in the context of teacher-student relationships within engineering programs. How might our interactions with students facilitate professional shame experiences, both for our students and ourselves? How can we advance well-being when we inevitably encounter these emotional experiences, both for our students and ourselves? By the end of this special session, attendees will have a nascent understanding of the concept of professional shame and be able to apply strategies to advance well-being when they experience this painful emotion.

Recently, researchers proposed that students’ reasons underlying their performance-approach goals may further our understanding of the nature of these goals (goal complexes). With a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach, we examined the function of performance-approach goal complexes on students’ L2 self-efficacy and anxiety, by surveying 283 Chinese college EFL-learners and conducting semi-structured interviews with six purposefully-selected students. Quantitative analyses showed that our data partly supported the proposed mediation model. Students’ controlled reasons to have performance-approach goals showed a significant direct effect on both their L2 anxiety (positively) and L2 self-efficacy (negatively). Conversely, students’ autonomous reasons showed a positive effect on their L2 self-efficacy, and a negative effect on their L2 anxiety, indirectly thro...

The North Florida Freedom Schools (NFFS) was designed to realize social justice by providing free educational opportunities, especially for underserved children. Within this context, we explored the students’ autonomous reading motivation and relevant variables to explain how the summer programming may support their motivation to read. In this mixed-methods study, we found that students’ autonomous motivation to read was positively related to their self-efficacy, autonomy, relatedness, and controlled motivation to read. Building positive social relationships and supporting autonomy were important factors in explaining students’ high autonomous motivation in NFFS. Moreover, students reported that participation in NFFS inspired them to effectively engage in reading activities and ...

Changes were generally monotonic across three occasions. These data implicate test proximity and overestimation of future effort as influences on academic expectations that seem worthy of more attention by teachers. They may reflect a tacit student strategy of changing goal levels in order to maintain desire in the face of declining expectations. Also the influence of expectancy and two types of value on motivation seemed to vary with proximity to an examination. Results support the importance of expectancy-value variables but also indicate the complexity of their contribution to classroom motivation. (Contains two tables and eight references.)
