cemetery of Niederkaina (District Bautzen)
in east Saxony represents a case-study par excellence.
At Niederkaina it is possible to record the continuous development of a society in the western
circle of Lusatian culture from the end of
Middle Bronze Age to the end of Early Iron Age
(Bz C/D–Ha D2/3 [1400–500 B.C.]). The uniquely
wide occupancy of this cemetery during
the Early Iron Age with 1185 graves of the Billendorf
culture – including a large number of
exceptionally furnished chambered tombs – is
analyzed in a recent project funded by the German
Research Foundation (DFG). The main aim
of this article is to reconstruct the complex burial
rituals with pre-funerary, funerary and postfunerary
acts, which are assigned to the cultural
anthropological concept of rites of passage. Only the reconstruction of ritual acts may offer an idea
of the enormous effort concerning the multi-layered
cremation burials. This approach enables
an access to their spiritual basis as well as to the
ritual communication reflecting social identities, social roles and relationships within a prehistoric
society. The reconstruction of burial rituals is
the basis for an action-oriented approach of the
analysis of social structures.

characterised by exceptionally equipped wooden chambered tombs, which stand out by subdivided
batches of crockery in a canonical ensemble. Three quarters of the adults were buried in such
tombs. Except from separate gender-specific burial objects, there were no significant differences
between men and women neither in the construction nor in the equipment of tomb. Women get
more easily captured because of the enclosed jewellery and certain special forms of pottery. On
the other hand weapons, tools or bridles, burial objects which elsewhere indicate man´s tombs,
are nearly complete absent in graves of Niederkaina and of the Billendorf culture.
Outstanding personalities and groups of persons are not archaeologically recorded in Upper Lusatia
and the whole area of Billendorf culture. By that fact, the Billendorf society seems to have
been quite egalitarian. However the settlement structure with open as well as intrenched settlements
and their belonging burial places, the buoyant contact and trade with neighbouring groups
and the involvement in the supra-regional distribution system show that Billendorf society had to
be well-organized and had to have consolidated structures
