This study examined gender influence as a determinant of Chemistry Teachers' Academic and Professional Competencies in SouthWest Nigeria. A sample of 692 senior secondary school chemistry teachers was proportionately drawn from five States in the Southwest. Two questionnaires used for data collection for the same set of respondents were Chemistry Teachers' Academic Competencies and Chemistry Teachers' Professional Competencies. Data were analyzed using percentages and t-test. Findings revealed that while male and female teachers were not different in their academic competencies, they were significantly different in their professional competencies. Female teachers were more competent in their professional knowledge, professional skills and professional values, attitude and conduct than their male counterparts. Based on this finding it was recommended that State governments should organize and fund a continuing professional development conference on the importance of teachers' professionalism where there should be uniformity in the training on professional knowledge, professional skills and professional values, attitudes and conducts the chemistry teachers are exposed to. This could bridge the gap of differences in the teachers' professional competencies.
