Slow lately? Hello. New here, is anyone still active in this group? It would be great to talk to other pilots.

Aviation anniversary Just a reminder, this day 108 years ago, the Wright brothers took their most famous series of flights. The first heavier than air, powered and controlled aircraft took off today.

Plane Spotting Found this site today while researching something on Airliners.net...its the NYC Spotters page, and it includes links to where to view planes, ATC freqs, etc. Nice little setup they have :)

Note that it also shows a few other city's spotting points, and tips on how not to get in trouble :P

As of Monday, 18Oct 2010, I am a commercial pilot, airplane multi-engine land, instrument rated.
Eh, it may not mean much, but it means a lot to me. ^.^

There's something awesome about knowing that you can fly an airplane into a cloud a dozen feet off the runway, and pop out the other side of that cloud 500' above your destination airport, configured for landing, and do everything in between with a minimum of fuss, with no instructor or safety net.
Truly an awesome feeling.
Not the most impressive flight, maybe, but I'm still happy with it.

"Flight Manifest of the Year" award? It's got my vote. So there I was... My chief pilot was covering dispatch for about an hour. Because the ability to create and print flight manifests is via a computer program, and the process is apparently known only to dispatchers, we had a bit of a problem...and I was to fly in 5 minutes. Then he got an idea. An awful idea. The chief pilot had a wonderful, awful idea:
Never underestimate the usefulness of the Post-It Note.
Get into trouble? Hell no--it did contain the information required to be legal (for you other 135 guys out there, remember I'm only single engine). Make a fed laugh? Most definitely.

I'm not sure this is such a great idea, as they will need to restrict huge swaths of public airspace for this thing, as well as the obvious 4th Amendment issues.
Does anyone know what the AOPA, FAA or ACLU have to say about this?

Hey everyone! Long time lurker, occasional poster here.
Just a quick and potentially daft question about ground school;
I'm getting ready to start my ground schooling, but I've recently been told that if I were to fail my ground schooling, that I wouldn't be able to take it again here in Canada.
So my question is, is there any veracity to this statement?

106 years Today is, of course, the 106th anniversary of the famous flights of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk, NC. Marking the first of controlled, powered, heavier-than-air air craft. I saw this a few weeks ago and decided to wait until today to post it.

Thanksgiving Flying Trip This is something I had been wanting to to for a while now, and last weekend I finally got the chance. At the same time, I have been wanting to visit friends in South Florida and flying there spared me the hassle of driving.
I arrived Thanksgiving Day, in the mid afternoon, flying from Melbourne International to Hollywood North Perry Airport. Friends were there to see me arrive as they lived just minutes from North Perry Airport. I would have flown out in the morning, but because of low-hanging clouds and fog, it was outside of VFR limitations and since I am not IFR rated, I had to wait.
I had discussed the idea of flying to Key West with my friends. Unfortunately, the winds were too strong on Friday to safely land in Key West. My flying skills are still developing, and I do not feel ready or experienced enough yet to tackle 20 knot crosswinds with gusts. So we instead took part in the madness that is Black Friday and walked among the crowds of Sawgrass Mall, and ended the evening watching Fantastic Mr. Fox in the theater.
By Saturday, the conditions had improved greatly and by mid afternoon I took off with my friends as my passengers for an 80-minute flight from North Perry to Key West Airport, following along the Keys. The view was beautiful from 3500 feet.
Once we were in Key West, we walked the length of Duval Street, spent a few hours in Mallory Square and watched some of the street performers and had supper there. Because the hotel prices were too high, being that this was Thanksgiving Weekend, we elected to return to Hollywood that night, and I ended up treating my friends to a night flight.
It was especially spectacular to see the Miami-Dade area from 2000 feet as we flew up the coast until we were past Miami International Airport's Class B airspace, and I was able to turn west, flying inland to North Perry Airport, arriving just before midnight.
This morning was more relaxed and by early afternoon, my friend took me to North Perry and I flew out, heading back to Melbourne Airport, finishing my weekend of flying. In all, I logged 6.5 hours of VFR cross-country flying, which brings me to a total of 19 hours of cross-country flying logged. I need a total of 25-hours of cross-country prior to starting my IFR flight training. I now have a total of 65.5 hours of flying experience.
I think I'll be going to Greenville, SC next, in January. I have friends I want to visit there.

Ok, ok.. I jest, mostly. But there's certainly a mindset and a mentality at play here, and I. Don't. Get. It.

That glider I was thinking of shipping? LOLOL
$6,859 for shipping
$3,750 GST (Goods and Services Tax, 12.5%)
$1,550 for inspections (20-30 hours, estimated at 25 hours)
$3,059 for transponder (not including installation)
$437 for registration
$205 for Southern Field compass
$1,153 for altimeter with millibars
------------------------------------
Total: $17,512. Costs in New Zealand dollars.
Well over half the value of the glider, presuming nothing goes wrong with it during shipping. I understand you have to pay to play, but is this out of control?

Nav lights I could go look this up, but I'm being lazy. Who can tell me what aircraft type would display a continuous green running light with a winking white strobe, and a red strobe, which was only visible directly from behind?

Just a xpost from my lj :) Thought some of you might enjoy.
Sunday was fun, scary, and full some new experiences :P
I started early but leaving the house around 7am to head out and setup my new/used circa 1988 Mark IV hang glider (I was only 7 when the first owner flew it :P ). Then I proceeded to get out the Falcon 195 training glider and put a flight on her no to much later. I nailed my landing within about 20ft of a orange cone I was trying to land on then gave the training glider up for another newer student who was suppose to solo soon. I thought my instructor was going to at least fly my new glider and make sure it didn't have any odd quirks or anything in flight but he pretty much just told me to gear up and go for it (must value his life :P ?). With the help of some friends at the site I was able to borrow another harness and aerotow release and got the glider setup on my dolly (my first dolly launch ever too) and we got the glider out to the flight line. All strapped in and on the cart we went over cart launches, emergency situations, landing styles without the big bulky gear, and just some confidence building shit then we decided to go for it. I was both pretty excited and scared a bit but mostly focused on trying not to screw up :P The tow on the ground went well though I let go of the cart a little early with my wing starting to dip a bit but then I popped up into the sky and straitened things out and tried to quickly get a feel for the bar pressure and just how this new/old kite handled. Needless to say I got her up and she brought me back down to earth safely from about 3000ft agl. I did 2 more subsequent flights after which both went well then packed it back up with
lacy 's help though we did end up getting pissed on by the lovely Florida sky :P Overall I'm happy with it so far. I still need to transition to landing on my feet and have alot to learn and I wont feel as bad if I give this bird a little bit of a beating vs something new and very pricey.
So yeah did quite a few new things in just a few flights and I'm here to share a few more photos thanks to
lacy 's camera skillz.
All setup.
On tow. If you look closely you can see the line thats attached to the tug plane.
Up up up !
Why hello there :)
GROUND !!!! Coming in at the proper angle anyhow ;p
So yeah thats about it. Not sure when I'll get another chance to fly with all the crazy work going on around here for AC. I did finally get signed off on for my Hang 2 rating so I can do this without a instructor in sight now hehe. Don't know if thats a good or bad thing :P Now I just need to get some more friends interested in the sport :)
