This book considers the transformations of both accumulation processes and labour in the transiti... more This book considers the transformations of both accumulation processes and labour in the transition from a Fordist to a cognitive capitalism paradigm, with specific regard to Western economies. It outlines the advent, after industrial capitalism, of a new phase of the capitalist system in which the value of cognitive labour becomes dominant. In this framework, the central stakes of capital valorization and of forms of property are directly based on the control and privatization of the production of collective knowledge. The transformation of knowledge itself, into a commodity or a fictitious capital, is analyzed. The contradiction between cognitive capitalism and a knowledge based economy will be here declined as a new historical form of the traditional contradiction between the development of productive forces and the exploitation of social relations. Building on this foundation, the authors outline their concept of `commonfare'. The idea of commonfare implies, as a prerequisite, the social re-appropriation of the gains arising from the exploitation of those social relations which are the basis of accumulation today. This re-appropriation does not necessarily leads to the transition from private to public ownership but it is necessary to distinguish between common goods and the commonwealth. As far as basic services such as health care or education or mobility are concerned (common goods), which are now increasingly privatized, the goal is to provide a public management of their supply as use-value against any attempt at commodification. But if we refer to the commonwealth, the framework is different, since the fruit of social cooperation and general intellect are neither private nor public goods. The only way to manage the commonwealth is the self-organization, by imagining a different regime of valorization, prioritising the needs of human beings.

Si tratta di un insieme di risorse ben delimitate – i cosiddetti beni comuni – o, invece, di un principio generale d'organizzazione sociale della produzione? La necessita di ripartire da tali interrogativi nasce dalla ricchezza, ma anche da una certa confusione, che caratterizza il dibattito sul Comune. Da un lato, nozioni come Comune al singolare, commons, beni comuni, proprieta comune, common-pool resources ecc., sono utilizzate talvolta come sinonimi, talvolta opposte le une alle altre, senza darne una definizione precisa. Dall'altro, si tende spesso a dimenticare come dietro l'uso di questi termini si celino approcci molto differenti, sia sul piano teorico, sia su quello del ruolo politico che il Comune potrebbe svolgere in un progetto di trasformazione sociale. The vitality of the new field of study on the commons crosses the entire field of social sciences... more The vitality of the new field of study on the commons crosses the entire field of social sciences, and it is analyzed from very different perspectives. On the one side, the Ostromian new Institutional economics uses the term commons as plural and seeks to give an account of the variety of the institutional forms of economic regulation. On the other, some new approaches interpret commons as an element of subversion of capitalism. These authors insist on the use of the concept as singular and they interpret it as a general principle of reorganization of economy and society. This article aims at analyzing the meanings of common and commons at stake in this debate. After a critical assessment of Elinor Ostrom’s contribution, the analysis will focus on the presentation of the theories of common as singular, distinguishing two currents of thought: the political conception of Dardot and Laval and the neo-workerist thesis of common as mode of production.

Much recent research investigating the actual capitalism changes based upon the knowledge-based e... more Much recent research investigating the actual capitalism changes based upon the knowledge-based economy development ignore the crucial role played by the welfare state expansion and by the various configurations of gender relations linked with the fordist model. Similarly, studies based on the welfare state models and the expansion of the social state functions use generally a static classification methodology. They also ignore the dynamics of capitalist transformations and the role of gender relations. The article tries to show how important has been the role played by the welfare-state expansion and the gender relations during the transformations from the fordist industrial capitalism to the cognitive capitalism. But the transition to the cognitive capitalism is a complex and contradictory process which can give rise to conflicting evolutions. Two extreme models are therefore proposed as potential issues. They are built regarding the main characteristics of the outlines of the cognitive capitalism institutional forms.

La mayoria de los analisis de las transformaciones actuales del capitalismo centradas en el desar... more La mayoria de los analisis de las transformaciones actuales del capitalismo centradas en el desarrollo de la economia del conocimiento oculta el papel crucial desempenado por el desarrollo del Estado providencia y por la configuracion particular de las relaciones de genero asociadas al modelo fordista. De manera analoga, la literatura sobre los modelos del Estado providencia y el desarrollo de funciones del Estado social utiliza generalmente una metodologia taxonomica esencialmente estatica e ignora la dinamica de las transformaciones del capitalismo y del papel de los regimenes de genero. El articulo apunta a mostrar el papel desempenado por el desarrollo del Estado providencia y los regimenes de genero en las transformaciones que llevaron del capitalismo industrial fordista al capitalismo cognitivo. Pero la transicion hacia el capitalismo cognitivo es un proceso complejo y contradictorio que puede dar lugar a evoluciones en direcciones opuestas. En este sentido, dos modelos polares son propuestos como el resultado potencial de trayectorias identificables en funcion de los principales parametros caracteristicos de las formas institucionales del capitalismo cognitivo.

La crise du capitalisme industriel-fordiste et la transition vers une nouvelle configuration du c... more La crise du capitalisme industriel-fordiste et la transition vers une nouvelle configuration du capitalisme, qualifie de capitalisme cognitif, sont a l'origine d'une transformation profonde du travail et des relations d'emploi qui ebranle les piliers de l'ancien modele de protection sociale . Dans le contexte de cette mutation, l'objet de cet article est de s'interroger sur les fondements theoriques et la faisabilite d'un revenu social garanti (RSG) inconditionnel et independant de l'emploi. Notre propos est de monter que ce dernier trouverait sa legitimite a la fois comme un investissement collectif de la societe dans le savoir et un revenu primaire pour les individus resultant d'une contribution directe a la creation de richesses et de valeur. Dans cette demarche, cet article s'articulera en deux parties.La premiere sera consacree a la caracterisation de notre conception du RSG tant dans son opposition aux propositions neo-liberales d'un impot negatif ou d'un revenu minimum d'activite que par rapport aux limites theoriques qui affectent les approches libertariennes d'une allocation universelle. Dans ce cadre, nous verrons egalement pourquoi les mutations actuelles du travail, liees a la montee de sa dimension cognitive, donnent un fondement socio-economique nouveau a la proposition de RSG et permettent de le penser comme un revenu primaire. La deuxieme partie se proposera alors d'articuler la question de la legitimite socio-economique a la reflexion sur la soutenabilite financiere de la proposition de RSG. Le cadre retenu pour cette estimation est celui relatif au cas francais, mais il ne s'agit la que d'une premiere ebauche que nous entendons par la suite etendre a l'echelle de l'Union Europeenne.

Most recent analysis of the rise of knowledge-based capitalism has obscured the critical role pla... more Most recent analysis of the rise of knowledge-based capitalism has obscured the critical role played by the welfare state and the system of gender relations associated with Fordism. Similarly, research into the various forms and functions of the welfare state has suffered from an essentially static and taxonomic approach, which ignores the changing dynamics of capitalism as well as the importance of gender. This article shows how the development of the welfare state and the system of gender relations affected the transition from Fordist industrial capitalism to "cognitive" capitalism. The transition to cognitive capitalism has been, however, a complex and contradictory process that could lead in opposing directions in the future.
