Video Game Movies (original) (raw)

For better or for worse, the new Mortal Kombat movie, now subtitled Devastation instead of Domination, is now officially in production, and is going to be filmed in... New Orleans, Louisiana? What the hell?

The choice of venues may be a little different, but it's obvious to us dirty southerners why LA was chosen: the state government started a program in 2002 giving a tax break of up to 25% of all costs to filmmakers plying their trade in Louisiana, including the costs of hiring local bands/musicians. Or something like that. Anyway, hopefully it won't matter where it's filmed, and Kombat fans will probably be enthralled all the same.

Apparently, the Louisianians (heh) are trying to make their beloved state into a full-fledged movie/resort area. The GameSpot article and the 2theadvocate.com article to which it links both mention the potential construction of a combination movie studio, film crew training facility and theme park, conceptually similar to Orlando, Florida's Universal Studios, to be built by Threshold Entertainment Company. Incidentally, Threshold is the company that holds the rights to Duke Nukem and, for those who are interested, the Ninja Scroll anime. Hey, Threshold, if you're reading, get to work on that fucking Duke Nukem movie, or at least give us a straight answer as to whether or not it'll happen.

On the Mortal Kombat official website (under the Film section) there are icons for all of the Mortal Kombat movies, as well as the one-season Mortal Kombat: Conquest TV show. The icon for Devastation is a fashionable purple question mark and the blurb off to the side pseudo-cryptically asks:

Are there enemies still burning with an unquenchable thirst for revenge? Our planet remains a precious gateway between realms, inhabited not by gods or sorcerers, but only by humans. Will Earth Realm be challenged again?

Now, I'm no Nostradamus, but my keen powers of prediction make me confident in saying.... yes. Yes, there are; and yes, it will. It shall be so. Etc., etc., etc.

Thank you and goodnight.
