This is the essence of a new book exploring human memory and emotion. Pollyanna's Revenge: How Memory and Emotion Foster Happiness explores people's ability to stay strong in the face of adversity, to bounce back after failure, and to thrive in even the most dire of circumstances. This new book combines empirical evidence gathered from around the world and little known narratives from places and people that exemplify the best and worst of the life experience. The reader will visit the fictional town of Mayberry, setting of the Andy Griffith Show; meet a convicted murderer who has asked God to forgive his sins; hear the tale of a bully that terrorized a midwestern town for a decade; and get to know a real life Pollyanna who is making the best of life in spite of significant health and emotional setbacks. Along the way, this book provides evidence that shows that positive emotions and events outnumber and outlast negative emotions and events. Summarizing almost 20 years of research in autobiographical memory, this book describes a phenomenon known as 'the fading affect bias', which is the tendency for negative emotions to fade faster than positive emotions. Pollyanna's Revenge is a book for readers interested in positive psychology, who want to better understand how the processes of the mind help most people to lead a happier life.

Assessment data suggest that students learned some of the conceptual basics of data mining, understood some of the ethical concerns related to the practice, and were able to perform correlations via the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, Version 20).

The first study tested the impact of language perspective and experimenter demeanor upon participant retention of the informed consent information, attitudes toward the research project, and performance on experimental tasks. The second study examined the impact of experimenter attire. Across the two studies, our results suggest that there was no impact of language perspective, whereas the number of other participants in the laboratory, experimenter attire, and experimenter demeanor influence participant behaviors in the laboratory.

The results of both studies showed that, when activated in identical ways, trait expectancies and stereotype expectancies had similar eVects on recall. Better recall was obtained for expectancy-incongruent items when expectancies were activated in relatively overt ways, while better recall for expectancy-congruent items was obtained when expectancies were activated in less overt ways. Additional analyses examining the order of events that emerged in the recall protocols provided little evidence that participants attempted to reconcile the items, as would be predicted by some earlier models of person memory (e.g., . The implications of these Wndings for how social expectancies guide social information processing are discussed.
