While the strike was sparked by a decrease in pay; the issues of the strike were more complex and entailed conflict over economic power, working conditions, workplace dignity, diversity, and corporate social responsibility. A two-phase of study was conducted to firstly identify generational cohorts in the state and, secondly, to investigate the attitude of each cohort to advertising. Utilizing theories of generations, a qualitative approach by means of personal interviews was used at the outset to identify external events which bring about the formation of cohorts. Accordingly, 48 interviews were conducted and data were content-analyzed. The findings were then incorporated into the second phase of study to investigate cohorts’ views about advertising, using theory of reasoned action. A quantitative approach via questionnaire-based survey was administered, and 1,410 copies were collected for analysis. Five distinct cohorts are proposed in the initial findings. Bernays influenced the evolution of the public relations field and in-turn the times he lived in from World War I through the start of the Information Age. This paper looks at Bernays’ career and legacy. It considers how Bernays’ work was influenced by his uncle Sigmund Freud. Also it looks at Bernays’ role in helping the development of consumer capitalism. Finally the paper discusses Bernays’ legacy as a pioneering genius in the field of public relations, but also the criticism that Bernays was an elitist willing to abuse the powers of mass persuasion.

towards work related issues. While the research confirmed some significant differences between the generational cohorts of Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y as reported in
managerial literature, the study also found some beliefs in common among the cohorts. These have implications for working relationships as well as recruitment and retention. Further, the
study observed that surveyed workers’ attitudes were in line with previous research from various parts of the world.
