_2:29 am_[black_godzilla] Wondering If The Rest Of You Guys Heard About This Virtual Gay BashingRichard RothsteinPosted Aug 6th 2007 6:30PM by Richard RothsteinFiled under: Bloggers, Comics, Gay Pride, Gay Rights, News, Homophobia, YouthNo one questions the need for or value of magazines or websites catering to straight men and women, but gay websites are often deemed pornographic or "adult content" simply because they have a gay perspective--sometimes on something as "adult" as gardening or literature or computer games-- and now they're even being targeted by homophobic hackers.Gaygamer.net was gay bashed after weeks of hate language and Internet abuse--just the way it happens in real life. First they tease you, then they insult you and then they show up late at night and crack open your skull with a baseball bat. In the virtual world they crash your siteFor those of you--like me--who don't give a damn about computer games, you might not know that gaygamer is a very popular and successful news site for gamers with a gay perspective--and that has outraged one or more straight (or closeted) gamers.Joystiq reports: "After a series of hate speech incidents and forum postings to gaygamer.net, the site was taken offline by a set of denial of service attacks. Flynn DeMarco, the site's owner, said things started going wrong toward the end of last week until the site's host, GoDaddy.com, finally took the site offline until the attacks could be stopped."As of now, the site is back up and the hackers have been blocked.Too many Americans have a bizarre and almost pathological need to hate--so much so that they will invent reasons to hate that have absolutely no grounding in fact. The target du jour of course is us. Scholars, Jewish and otherwise, have spent hundreds of years exploring the reasons for Antisemitism and yet we still lack agreement on a definitive answer as to why it exists. Most scholars attribute the origins of Antisemitism to early policy decisions made by the Catholic Church. At one time in history Jewish universities and cities flourished throughout Europe but then one of the Popes had a chat with Jesus and everything changed.I suspect that scholars will spend centuries examining American homophobia and never come up with one good reason--but fundamentalist religions surely play a major part in sustaining and fueling homophobia much in the way that the Vatican sustained and fueled centuries of Antisemitism.Religion sadly provides justification for the irrational hatred of too many people. And that hatred translates into hate crimes, real and virtual.Europe clearly learned a lesson from the Nazi era--the culmination of centuries of Church-driven campaigns against Jews-- and as a result Europe today has wide-ranging hate crime laws that are used to disarm and isolate anti-social and pathologically disturbed people and groups. The hate postings and hacking of gaygamer.net would be considered a hate crime in most EU nations and the culprits would be hunted down by Interpol and prosecuted. Some of you will see that as a violation of free speech and freedom of religion--at least that's how American bigots portray such laws.In the meantime--and I have no real knowledge of the demographics of gaygamer.net--but I'm sure it's safe to assume that many of its readers are kids, gay kids. And while they'll respond to this assault with anger and wisecracks, like me and many of you, they are also feeling fear and hurt. When I was 7 years old I stormed into the kitchen after school and announced to my mother that I was changing my name to "plain Jim Smith." I angrily explained that I was tired of being teased and bullied for being Jewish. My mother made fun of me and went around for several days calling me "Plain Jim Smith"; my father shortened it to "Plain." Desperately wanting my parent's approval, I finally joined in and made fun of myself, but secretly I wondered why my parents were also Antisemitic. The good news was that this and similar moments braced me for homophobia. But 50 years down the road, I'm really sick of it. I'm sick of the Antisemitism and I'm sick of the homophobia and I'm sickened by the fact that gay kids who have formed a community on gaygamer.net have been collectively bashed. Some will trivialize this incident. I will not. (Comment on this)

_2:13 am_[black_godzilla] I Had No Idea This Was Even Being Thought Up I was just looking up some "things" and stumbled across this. I was just wondering if anyone was aware of this:The Supreme Court of Kansas struck down a state law Friday that penalized same-sex statutory rapes by 18-year-olds much more harshly than heterosexual cases, ruling that the law unconstitutionally discriminated against homosexuals. In a 6-0 opinion, the court said its decision was required by the U.S. Supreme Court's 2003 ruling in Lawrence vs. Texas, a landmark victory for gay rights that abolished all state laws criminalizing sodomy between consenting adults.Friday's ruling was the first time after several attempts that gay rights advocates had managed to translate the Lawrence victory into a favorable ruling on another issue in the lower courts. In 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court established same-sex marriage, based on the state's Constitution, not Lawrence.James Esseks, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union's Gay and Lesbian Rights Project, argued the case on behalf of Matthew Limon, who will be released after serving five years of a 17-year-sentence under the Kansas law. His sentence would have been at most 15 months if he had been convicted of a heterosexual act.Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline said the state would probably not appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, noting that, as a Republican state legislator, he had voted against the disputed provision.Still, at a time when the courts' role in social issues is at the heart of debate over President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, the ruling was likely to raise conservative concerns."The court acted like a legislature when it attempted to rewrite the statute," said Mathew Staver, President and General Counsel of Liberty Counsel, a conservative litigation organization that supported Kansas in the case.In 2000, Limon was 18 and a student at a state residential school for mentally disabled youth. That year, he was convicted of having oral sex with a fellow student who was one month shy of his 15th birthday. There was no claim the sex was coerced. Kansas, like many other states, criminalizes voluntary sex between adults and minors. But in 1999, it enacted a "Romeo and Juliet" law that set a lower penalty for a statutory rape involving an 18-year-old having sex with a 14- or 15-year-old. The lighter punishment applied only to "members of the opposite sex."Limon appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, claiming unconstitutional discrimination. The court held the case until it had decided Lawrence, then sent the issue back to the Kansas courts with instructions to review it in light of the new precedent.Kansas's lower appeals court once again upheld the law, finding it constitutional because it was connected to the state's interests in protecting the normal sexual development of children and preventing sexually transmitted diseases. But the Kansas Supreme Court said that, under Lawrence, Kansas may not use its laws to express "moral disapproval" of homosexuality -- and denying any "rational basis" for the Kansas law's distinction between homosexual and heterosexual acts."Neither the court of appeals nor the state cites any scientific research or other evidence justifying the position that homosexual sexual activity is more harmful to minors than adults," the court said. _8:22 pm_[madamealexis] KKK To Hold Anti-Gay Rally In Austin (Austin, Texas) The city of Austin on Monday gave the Ku Klux Klan permission to hold a rally against same-sex marriage on a public square in front of city hall. The decision was made as early voting began on a proposed amendment to the Texas constitution to ban gay marriage. The KKK rally will be held November 5 on the south plaza of Austin City Hall.In seeking permission for the protest, called a "pro-family" rally, the American White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan said: "Our speech will not be inflammatory, but we all know the reputation of the name of the KKK, so we expect anti-Klan demonstrators to be there who may become violent. We certainly don't want any of our people hurt nor any city officials. We just want to come and encourage people to vote for Christian Family Values and against legalized homosexual marriage in the state of Texas."Voters will go to the polls November 8, three days after the Klan rally, to cast ballots on the gay marriage ban, that would also bar civil unions.http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/10/102405austinKKK.htm (Comment on this)

_3:26 pm_[madamealexis] Gay Adoption Laws The Loftons Story broke my heart and made me angry. GLBT people are being treated like a disease and blamed for all that is wrong in the world no matter who is really responsible for it. Why is it wrong for GLBT people to want to love and adopt a child? Should not the focus be on the immoral behavior and outrage against straight parents that pop kids out like a baby factory and abandon their kids? If that would stop happening there would be less of a need for adoption and foster care! The majority of kids in the system are abandoned and not made parent-less by deaths in the family.Steve and Roger are regularly reminded that Florida's law banning gay adoption puts their family in jeopardy. Every few weeks, a letter comes from the state, giving an update on the status of finding another family to adopt Bert. Because he no longer tests positive for HIV and is under the age of 14, Bert is deemed "adoptable." Steve and Roger are legally prohibited from adopting him because of Florida's ban. So the state continues its effort to find him another home, even though this is the only family he's ever known.Social science experts who have studied over 1,000 children and 500 lesbian or gay parents solidly refute the idea that gay parents and their children are not as healthy and happy as other families. Studies conducted over the past two decades have compared gay parents and their children to heterosexual parents and their children. They have measured the quality of parent/child relationships, parents' and children's psychological well-being, children's relationships with their peers, and children's self-esteem. Not a single respected study has found that gay parents are bad parents or that their sexual orientation harms the children they raise. For more information on Gay adoption and/or to support Bert in his desperate time of need go to this website: http://www.lethimstay.com/loftons.html (Comment on this)

_5:31 pm_[justapieceofme] LBT Takeover Well, as many of you know, this past weekend was Gay Days at Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure. While I couldn't go to the evnt, I did work both days and walked the park a bit before and after work, and I've gotta say, I could not be more disappointed. This was for a variety of reasons, but here's my number-one issue: rather than a park full of my "family," I saw a park full of middle aged gay men. Where were the lesbians? The bisexuals? The transpeaople? Granted, I work at Hungry Bear, home of the "bear lover" meet-up, but still. I literally saw less than 5 red-shirt-clad women the entire weekend. Those I did were in their 40s. I began to realize that, despite having one meet-up a day specifically for women and a couple for youth, these men are the people Gay Days really target. And, for a 19-year-old dyke hoping to meet others like herself, this is damned disappointing. So I'm proposing that we stage an LBT takeover. Either at next years' Gay Days or (this is my preference, especially because I don't feel like waiting another whole year after spending the whole last year looking forward to this), on our own day. Which is not to say your average, everyday gay man can't come, but this is not targeted at them. Just like we can come to Gay Days, but it's not targeted at us. Hell, we could even give the guys a little meet-up.So, who's with me?Official site for Anaheim Gay Days is here.X-posted like crazy. (Comment on this)

_7:43 pm_[ninjahobbit] Thaught I'd Stop By! NYC here! I was searching all the journals under romance NYC. I typed gay romance and only a few came up. This one was one of them. Well, I will post here often. Hope that more people will too. I hate the "scene". I often go out and don't meet anyone. One night stands left me cold, frustrated and lonely. I need to make (more) friends. NYC is a big place, yet everyone doesn't have the time. I often feel rushed, like I have somewhere to go/something to do. I want to stop and look around. When I do. I feel alone. It sinks in. I think a lot of people feel the same way. I won't post here looking for romance. I will post here to talk and listen and hope to be listened and talked to. Maybe to vent. Ranting and raving..hell, I feel like screaming..AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH...lolIs there anybody out there?"If I was a good man, Id talk to you more often than I do" Current Mood: pensive (Comment on this)
