From the ancient Roman graves to the present, there are numerous examples of contributions made by women in the area of medicine. Female neuroscientists have faced several challenges, particularly gender inequality, like in every other scientific discipline. All these difficulties have been encountered by numerous female neuroscientists, many of whom have found great success. Some of the female neuroscientists who opened the door for us are Sofia Ionescu, Diana Beck, Aysima Altınok, Alexa Canady, M. Deborah Hyde, Augusta Dejerine Klumpke, Julia Barlow Platt, Laura Forster, Manuela Serra, and Mara Soledad Ruiz-Capillas. These superwomen are wives, mothers, and grandmothers, in addition to all their other achievements. As female neuroscientists, it is important for us to be aware of the inspiring tales of these women who have paved the way for us and inspire...

GIT has a comprehensive internal nervous system called enteric nervous system (ENS), which can control intestinal function, even if it is totally cut off from the central nervous system (CNS). [1] The ENS provides unique innervation of the intestine and is the most neurochemically diverse part of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). [2] The ENS was described by British physiologist John Newport Langley as one of the three autonomic nervous system parts: parasympathetic nervous system, enteric nervous system and sympathetic nervous system. [3] More than 100 million efferent neurons that reach the intestines through the vagus nerve are present in human ENS. [4] Unlike the rest of the PNS, the complexity of managing bowel behavior is a privilege that evolution provides to the ENS, which has led to the ability to manifest complementary neuronal activity and to control gastrointestinal behavior independently of the brain or spinal cord. [5-7] The ENS has at least as many neurons as in the spinal cord but has more neurons than any other group of peripheral ganglia. Unique to PNS, the ENS is regulated in microcircuits with intrinsic primary afferent neurons (IPANs) and interneurons that are capable of initiating reflexes. The phenotypic diversity of enteric neurons is very wide and almost every class of neurotransmitters found in the CNS has been identified in the ENS. [6] Although the ENS can work independently from the CNS, it normally does not; CNS affects the enteric system and the intestine also sends information to the brain. Indeed, 90% of the vagal fibers between the intestine and the brain are afferent, suggesting that the brain is more recipient than a giver in brainintestinal communication. [6,8] ENS is located within the tubular digestive system walls, biliary system and pancreas. ENS has myenteric and submucosal plexuses, two ganglioned plexuses in the intestine, where almost all intrinsic nerve cells are present. [9] The myenteric plexus is located between the outer longi

With the discovery of new medicinal plants, new therapeutic areas have emerged. On the other hand, the posology of these plants and indications for use during pregnancy or adolescence are still debated. The use of Melissa officinalis L. (M. Officinalis) in traditional medicine is common, but its effect on fetal development is not clear. Ultrasonographic evaluation of fetal development is critical. Unfortunately, ultrasound probe differences used in pregnancy studies in rats are confusing. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to search both possible effects of M. officinalis on fetal development, and test the effectiveness of human breast ultrasound probes in the ultrasonographic evaluation of rat fetuses. Rats were randomly divided into Control and M. officinalis groups. M. officinalis was gavaged for 21 consecutive days 24 hours after mating. Rats in the Control group were treated with the extract ...

Based on their morphology, relationships and staining characteristics, he considered these cells as primitive neurons. One century later, despite major improvements in cell biology, the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) are still controversial for many researchers. The aim of study was to perform an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characterization of the ICCs in the rabbit duodenum. We have found interstitial cells that are positive for c-Kit, CD34 and nestin and are also positive for Ki67 protein, tightly associated with somatic cell proliferation. By means of electron microscopy, we describe ICCs around enteric ganglia. They present triangular or spindle forms and a very voluminous nucleus with scarce perinuclear chromatin surrounded by a thin perinuclear cytoplasm that expands with long cytoplasmic processes. ICC processes penetrate among the smooth muscle cells and couple with the processes of other ICCs located in the connective tissue of the circular muscle layer and establish a three-dimensional network. Intercellular contacts by means of gap-like junctions are frequent. ICCs also establish gap-like junctions with smooth muscle cells. We also observe a population of interstitial cells of stellate morphology in the connective tissue that sur-rounds the muscle bundles in the circular muscle layer, usually close to nervous trunks. These cells establish different types of contacts with the muscle cells around them. In addition, the presence of a single cilium showing a structure 9 + 0 in an ICC is demonstrated for the first time. In conclusion, we report positive staining c-Kit, CD34, nestin and Ki 67. ICCs fulfilled the usual transmission electron microscopy (TEM) criteria. A new ultrastructural characteristic of at least some ICCs is demonstrated: the presence of a single cilium. Some populations of ICCs in the rabbit duodenum present certain immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characteristics that often are present in progenitor cells.

K-I treatment did not cause significant changes in the (i) body and adrenal weights; (ii) basal plasma levels of ACTH, aldosterone and corticosterone; and (iii) average volume of adrenocortical cells and their basal secretory capacity. Conversely, K-I administration induced a significant magnification of the in vivo mineralo- and glucocorticoid responses to the intraperitoneal (i.p.) bolus injection of ACTH. Moreover, K-I-treated rats, but not control ones, displayed a moderate and short-term adrenal secretory response to the mild stress evoked by the placebo i.p. injection. Collectively, these findings rule out the possibility that endogenous BK plays a relevant role in the control of adrenocortical function under basa...
