This study proposes grouping learners of different grades into vertical teams and organizing studio syllabi around design competitions. It focuses on a singlesemester post-disaster collaborative experience at StudioThinkImagine, Gazi University, Turkey, examining its lasting impact on learners. The qualitative inquiry consists of two main components: firstly, an exploration of the studio's pedagogical strategies, utilization of design competitions, and teamwork dynamics amidst post-disaster conditions, and secondly, indepth interviews conducted with learners one year after the studio experience. These interviews centered on understanding how students lived through the studio, how they perceived it compared to other studio experiences, and what enduring effects it had on them. Data analysis was facilitated using NVivo14, enabling the extraction of key themes and insights from the interviews. The findings align with existing literature on peer-to-peer learning within studio environments and the beneficial role of competitions as educational tools. Participants described the teamwork and competitive aspects as challenging and demanding yet enriching, even when conducted online in a post-disaster context. The study emphasizes the potential of student competitions in architectural design education, underscoring peer learning as a critical element shaping future studio practices.

Following past discourses, the paper brings emotionalism up again as an architectural, artistic, and urban movement. Three sources were analyzed qualitatively: (i) The film itself as a representative/symbolic source, (ii) H. Wright's lecture as the theoretical/historical framework crystalizes the basics of the emotional discourse, and (iii) The interview with the architect/director Tszwai So, as the main discussion that relates the film with the discourse. The findings highlight the negative impact of technology on emotional health and wellbeing, emphasizing the exclusion of emotions from people's lives. Key insights include: • Integrating emotions and memories into urban life enhances individuals' resilience and attachment to their environments, thereby improving emotional health and wellbeing. • Art and architecture are pivotal in addressing and incorporating emotions within urban planning and life. • The practice of flânerie (strolling or walking in the city) is a powerful method for evoking and constructing emotions and should be reintegrated into urban and architectural design. The study advocates for Emotionalism as a movement that prioritizes individuals' senses, feelings, memories, and identities in contemporary urban planning and architecture.

The study proposes a multi-dimensional assessment model that enables consideration of several workplace issues in tandem. Focusing on user satisfaction, the first part of the study is a holistic approach concerned with technical, functional and behavioral variables that provides a broad understanding about gender (in)differences. Personalization, the core issue of the second part of the study, is measured through personal display items, autonomous behavior and office layout preferences of men and women employees. The findings indicate the presence of significant gender differences in terms of satisfaction felt with regard to the behavioral variables. The results also support previous findings indicating that men and women use different personal display items in order to personalize their offices. More women were diagnosed to be changing their room layout on a temporary basis whereas men and women were evidenced for having similar attitudes in making permanent changes and in preferring an office layout for themselves. The findings suggest that gender difference is still a valid subject in workplace research although the differences may not be as sharp as the conventional gender difference myth claims, implying a better understanding of the issues that differently satisfy men and women.

Media tools, which are highly related to professions, affected the discipline of architecture as well and changed its dynamics in terms of design, production, marketing, and advertising. In this context, a closer look at the media concept becomes necessary due to its triggering effect on critical thinking in architecture. In this study, 5 functions of digital media (Information, Cultural continuity, Socialization, Creating/Shaping Public Opinion and Entertainment) which were defined by Katz (Katz, 1960), McQuail, D. (1987) and Burton, G., & Marshall, P. D. (1993) will be introduced in detail and the Archdaily platform, one of the most popular and widely used new media of Architecture, will be analyzed via these functions. For this, 967 posts published by Arcdaily in 2019 were analyzed. In addition to the main hypothesis 'Does Archdaily operate as a new architectural medium?', sub-analyzes was carried out to see how Archdaily contributed to the world of architecture. Findings indicated that Archdaily was active in fulfilling all the 5 functions of media, though 3 functions, which are "socializing", "providing cultural continuity" and "entertaining", were observed to be fulfilled less than giving information and creating/shaping public opinion. Furthermore, qualitative analyses have shown that media functions were associated with the contents of publications. Findings imply the need for digital platforms to increase their activities in all functions equally and even surprise or exceed the 5 functions theory by adding new dimensions.

Purpose: The hypothesis of the study; although tall buildings are often criticized as monotonous and simple glass boxes, it is on the idea that buildings have a high variety and richness of detail when measured numerically. Method: In this direction, eight architectural periods were determined for tall buildings and fractal analyzes were carried out on five well-known structures belonging to each period. Results: All evaluated structures had low fractal values in terms of silhouette variable (DS) and high fractal values in terms of form+ornament+material variable (DFOM). The period with the lowest value in terms of facade detail is the International Period, while the period with the highest value is the Free Form Period. In terms of the detail of the building silhouette, the Technological Period stands o...

Method: In describing the approach, initially, the intellectual and critical foundations and features of liquid architecture were emphasized, and subsequently, its relationship with music was discussed through case studies in comparison to the current relationship between architecture and music. Results: When the current relationships of the architecture and music are evaluated, the attitude apart from the arising sensations and affections doesn’t exist within the relationship of liquid architecture and music. Liquid architecture, which has characteristics such as continuity, timelessness, plurality, poetry and obscurity, acquires the characteristics of the individual varying based on his/her body, senses, perceptions, and emotions as the way of producing...

The present study proposes a multi-dimensional model for the issue. The model is based on following variables: (i) technical, (ii) functional, (iii) spatial impact, (iv) emotional status of the studying person and (v) attachment. A questionnaire of 43 items was conducted to measure user satisfaction regarding performances. 170 academicians from Gazi University, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture replied. All subjects were full time academicians and owned a private room. Within the framework of the proposed model, firstly correlations between variables were analyzed. Secondly, causality analyses were performed to diagnose the effect of each performance variable on “emotional attachment”. Findings diagnosed emotional status as the variable that had the most significant effect on emotional attachment. Spatial impact was the second and functional performance was the third and the las...

Research paper thumbnail of Gender (in)difference in private offices: A holistic approach for assessing satisfaction and personalization

A total of 80 residents were surveyed. Participants were the householders of 1-bedroom 1-bathroom; 2-bedroom 1-bathroom and 3-bedroom 1-bathroom apartments in a settlement designed and constructed by the Turkish Housing Development Administration for the employees of the Turkish National Police. Since similar schemes are still being constructed in large quantities all over the country, the results of this study could provide guidance and affect quality control for future developments. The model was based on three variables: (1) overall residential satisfaction, (2) general residential satisfaction and (3) resident and residency characteristics. The study first identified the issues that the residents had expressed satisfaction and dissatisfaction with their accommodation; these issues were then prioritized and the problematic features that needed im...

Research paper thumbnail of Rise and Functions of New Media in Architecture: An Investigation via Archdaily
