Albert is a Professor of African History, Peace and Conflict Studies and the pioneer Dean, Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies, University of Ibadan. He is also the Co-Chair of the National Think Tank for Translating Research to Innovations, Strategies and Evidence for Policies, established by the University of Ibadan Research Foundation. He obtained his PhD degree in African History from the University of Ibadan in 1994 and did a Certificate course in peacekeeping and conflict resolution at the UN International Leadership Academy (Amman, Jordan) in 1999. Albert was a two time (1991 and 1994) winner of the (MA and PhD) Thesis Writing Fellowship of the Council for the Development of Economic and Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Dakar. He trained in peace processes in the UK, USA, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Algeria, South Africa and other parts of Africa.
Albert joined the Institute of African Studies as a Junior Research Fellow in 1993 and became a full Professor in 2006. He was the University’s Director Institute of African Studies from 2010 to 2012; the pioneer Director of the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies from 2015 to 2018 and the pioneer Dean Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies in August 2019.
He established the MA and Ph.D degree programme of the University of Ibadan in Peace and Conflict Studies in 2000 and also established the MA and Ph.D course of the University of Ilorin (Nigeria) in Peace and Strategic Studies in 2009. He was the UNDP Consultant for the design of the MA Peace and Development Studies Programme of the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. While serving in Ilorin, he assisted the Nigerian Army School of Education at Sobi Barracks to pioneer an annual Executive Management Course for officers in the ranks of Lt Colonel and Colonel. The course has grown bigger since then making it possible for officers of the Education Corps of the Nigerian Army to obtain the PhD degree of the University of Ilorin in Peace and Strategic Studies. He also facilitated the academic link between the University of Ilorin and the Institute of Security Studies (an academic citadel of the Directorate of States Services - DSS) in Abuja. Under the programme, a number of DSS operatives in Nigeria are now awarded the MA and PhD degrees of the University of Ilorin annually. Albert was a member of the Ghana Accreditation Board visitation team leading to the setting up of the MA course of the Command and Staff College Teshie Ghana in Defence Studies and International Politics in April 2014.
He was a Research Associate at the Centre for Research on Inequality and Human Security (CRISE) at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom from 2003 to 2007. He was a Resident Scholar of the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Centre in February/March 2016 to commence work on his forthcoming book on the media strategies of terrorists. He was appointed the Editor in Chief of the African Union’s African Journal on Terrorism in 2019.
He served as the Regional Board Chairman of the West African Network for Peace building (Accra, Ghana) from February 2015 to February 2017. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators; Fellow, Institute of Corporate Administration (ICA) and an Associate Member of the Finnish Folklore fellows (Helsinki) instituted by the Finnish Academy of Letters. He became a Member, West Africa Body of Peace Fellows, Accra, Ghana in 2019. He is a Full Member of the Chatham House London (113597).
He was a federal delegate to the 2014 National Conference in Abuja. He served in the committee on Immigrations and Related Matters. In 2014/ 2015 he served as a member of the Presidential Panel on the Review Nigeria’s Defence Policy. He founded the Society for Peace Studies and Practice, which today brings together peace scholars and practitioners in Nigeria annually to discuss the peace of the country.
