Ofole, Ph.D Department of Guidance & Counselling University of Ibadan E-mail: stainless4god@yahoo.com Abstract Unlike in the conventional university where students’ success is dependent on instructors’ ability to modify content to suit the learners’ need during face-to-face interaction, learners in Open and Distance Education (ODE) are geographically separated from the instructors, therefore, course materials and electronic technology are mainly the communication tools. Studies show that unmet emotional needs for human contact, lack of self-motivation, and feelings of isolation deter success in ODE. These emotional predictors of success in ODE correspond with emotional intelligence (EI). EI is about the intelligent use of emotion to make effective decisions. This concept has generated debates in psychology literature. There is however, acknowledgement by professionals and lay o...

D... more ABSTRACT Distance learning is an excellent method of reaching different categories of learners. Due to the competing priorities of work, home, and school, some learners desire a high degree of flexibility. The structure of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) gives the learner the greatest possible control over the time, place and pace of education; however, it is not without problems. Loss of student motivation due to the lack of face-to-face contact with teachers and peers, use of information and communication technology (ICT) and non availability of course materials are all barriers to successful distance learning. Available data at Ibadan Study Centre show a high student’s attrition partly attributed to the above mentioned factors. Thus, attrition rate casts a dark cloud to the future of Open and Distance Learning in Nigeria. Therefore, this study examined the influence of gender, course of study and age on problems experienced by students on ICT, course materials and face...

This construct has been found to be positively associated with cognitive development, academic achievements, moral behavior, higher self-esteem, and an internal locus of control. Researches also indicate that lack of parental support is associated with negative outcomes such as delinquency, deviance, drug abuse, low self-esteem, and other problem behaviors. There is therefore the need to examine the adolescents’ perception of the quality of their relationship and daily interactions with parents amongst adolescents in secondary schools in Lagos state metropolis. The role of perception in guiding human values, interests and behaviours are well documented .Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. Eight hundred respondents (Male= 238; Female=562) with age range of 10-19 years ( =4.0, SD=3.2) were drawn using...

Four hundred adolescents whose age ranged from 15 to 19 (SD=17.37) were drawn using Multi-stage sampling technique. Three standardized and one researcher developed self-report measures were used for data collection. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and regression statistics were used to analyze data at 0.05 level of significance. Self-esteem, parental involvement and religiosity have negative relationship with participants' risky sexual behaviours. The independent variables accounted for 30.3% of the variance in prediction of risky sexual behaviour. Self-esteem made the highest contribution to the prediction of risky sexual behaviour of adolescents while parental involvement made the least contribution. The need for Programme designers, sexuality educators, and Counsellors to incorporate these variables into activities to delay sexual debut by adolescents was implied from this outcome.

With scanty available data, counselling psychologists will be unable to institute appropriate intervention. For this reason, survey design was utilized to investigate the relationship between parental bonding and body image on sexting behaviour among teenagers randomly drawn from business centres, shopping malls, and eateries located in Lagos Island. A sample of 1334 teenagers consisting 650 males (48.7 %) 684 females (51.3%) with age range of 10-19 years ( =14.5 years) responded to Sexting Behaviour Scale (α=0.68); Parental Bonding Instrument (α=0.71) and Appearance Schemas Inventory (α=0.73). The result show that 30.8 % of the surveyed teenagers have either sent or posted sexually suggestive content to someone via email, IM, text, and Skype while 27.1 % have exchanged a sexy personal message/picture/video. Four hundred and seventy-one respondents (35.3%) said the major motivation for sexting was as a "sexy" present to a boy friend/ girl friend. Pearson Product Moment Correction analyses show a perfect negative relationship between parental bonding and sexting behaviour (r=-0.704, p<0.05) and a moderate inverse relationship with between body image and sexting behaviours (r=-444, p<.05). It was recommended that Counselling Psychologist should leverage on the media to provide sexting education. Parents should be taught skills of positive bonding to enable them monitor their teenagers' negative usage of the social networks.

In order to turn the bold dreams and ground-breaking ambition of the 2030 agenda into tangible results and to "meet the needs of the present Nigerians without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs", this paper proposes that counselling services are sine qua non. This stance is premised on the fact that counselling have well documented evidence in assisting individuals to take the right decision or choose a course of action that will benefit all and sundry. Specifically, the paper recommended four major roadmaps for localizing the Sustainable Development Goals, namely; (i) provision of career counselling services (ii) utilising evidence-based practices for recruitment and placement (iii) prevention of human and material wastages traceable to youth restiveness (iv) and last but not least, is changing Mindset (cognitive restructuring) for actualization of SDGs. It concluded that in order to translate the rhetoric of the 2030 agenda into reality there is need to step beyond traditional approaches and consider strategies that are evidence informed and innovative. One of the strategies is to give counselling services prominence in every sector of the economy because it has the capacity of shaping the personal, social, career and emotional behaviours of individuals for optimal performance in every sphere of life.

Simple random sampling technique was used to draw 1668 (male=838; female=830) with age range of 10 to 20 years and mean age of 15≥ from schools in South Eastern Nigeria. Brief Sensation Seeking Scale (r=.89) and Dresden Body Image Questionnaire (r=.87) were utilised to collect data. Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data was analyzed-using Levenne's test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result shows that the male has higher sensation seeking behaviours (í µí±¥̅ =77.244) than their female counterpart (í µí±¥̅ =76.119), however, this difference was not significant (t (1667) =.756 p > 0.5. p=.499). There was significant age difference in sensation seeking behaviours (F (4, 1664) = 7.574, P < 0.05). Respondents in age range of 10 to 12 years has highest mean score (í µí±¥̅ =74.244) while the least was those between ages 19 and above (í µí±¥̅ =65.331). There was significant difference (t (1667) = .517 p < 0.5) in sensation seeking behaviours of adolescents in southeastern Nigeria based on perceived body image. The researcher concluded that the sensation seeking behaviours of students differs based on gender, age, and body image. Recommendations were made based on the outcome of the study.

This study examined the comparative effectiveness of Mental Contrasting Therapy (MCT) and Self-Regulation Strategies (SRS) on enhancing goal setting skills of students in urban Nigeria. A group of 120 students (male=52, female=68) with age range of 14-17 years and mean age of ≥ 13.5 years were purposively drawn from secondary schools in urban Nigeria. Each of the intervention groups was exposed to 10 sessions of therapy designed to improve their goal setting skills. The control group served as comparison group. The result revealed a significant main effect of treatments on goal setting skills (F (2,105) =14.958, p<0.05) with the intervention groups demonstrating greater ability to utilize the acquired skills than the comparison group as evidenced on the mean score. The effect size reveals that treatment accounted for 22.2% (η 2 =0.222) change in the participants' goal setting skills. Participants treated with SRS reported higher mean score at post-test ( =69.09) when compared with their counterpart in MCT group ( =66.93). Self-efficacy and gender have significant interactive effect with treatments F (4,105) = 6.375, p<0.05, η 2 =0.195 and F (2,105) =13.561, p<0.01, η 2 =0.205 respectively. The researchers concluded that though the two therapies were effective, SRS was more potent in enhancing goal setting skills of the participants.
