Nigerian economy and absence of critical infrastructure. The study adopted a population sample of 995 participants from the 5 Local Government Areas (LGA)s that constitute Ibadan Metropolis using the simple random sampling technique. Research instruments included a
questionnaire titled ‘Corps Members Perception Questionnaire (CMPQ,‘r’=0.85). CMPQ was validated by test construction experts from the University of Ibadan, in Nigeria. The findings of the study reveals as follows; 74.77% (X=1.86) of NYSC members were not induced with money
neither did themselves induce anyone to effect their posting to Oyo state or place of Primary Assignment. 76.3% (X=1.88;SD=1.03) felt secured in their place of Primary assignment with no threat to their lives. Welfare services of the participants determined greatly the effectiveness of
the programme with R =0.83 and R 2 =0.69. The relative contributions of the indices were deployment to scheme and place of primary assignment (β=0.12, t=5.53;p<0.05), hospitality in the environment (β=0.73, t=3.30; p<0.05), regularity in payment of allowances (β=0.10, t = 3.83; p<0.05). The study recommended among others that Government must review the welfare packages of youth corpers from time to time due to the vagaries in our national economy. Again, the programme should not be abrogated but reformed to post participants to their geographical zones.

The descriptive research design was adopted for this study. The multi-stage procedure was used to sample participants 703 of the 15,157 undergraduate students. The two validated instruments used for data collection were: the Life Skills Acquisition Scale (r = 0.76), which measured the education quality of undergraduates students and the Undergraduate Enrolment and Staff Strength Template, to collect secondary data on SSR from the Academic Planning Unit. Four research questions were answered using descriptive statistics and four hypotheses were tested at P < 0.05 level of significance using inferential statistics. Findings revealed that education quality received by undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan was very good with overall average performance of 70. Also, There was no significant difference (P > 0.05; t cal = 1.27 < t crit = 1.96) between male and female undergraduate students in UI as regards the education quality received. In the same vein, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05; t cal = 0.06 < t crit = 1.96) between 300 and 400 levels students in UI as regards the education quality received. Furthermore, findings showed that there was a significant difference (P < 0.05; t cal = |3.66| > t crit = 1.96) between NUC recommended SSR for undergraduate programmes and current SSR in undergraduate programme in UI. The SSR in UI was far lesser than the NUC recommended SSR. (UI = 10.38 and NUC = 21.56,). Finally, the SSR in undergraduate programme in UI had no significant influence (F (1, 14) = 2.24, P > 0.05) on quality education. It was concluded that, students-teacher ratio in University of Ibadan, despite being lower than the NUC benchmark and having a negative relationship with education quality in the institution, was not an explanation for the high education quality in the institution-a situation, which may be peculiar to UI and therefore raising the need for a nationwide study. Therefore, it was recommended that, UI should sustain and consolidate on its current efforts in

PERCEPTIONS OF CORPS MEMBERS ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC) SCHEME IN IBADAN METROPOLIS, OYO STATE, NIGERIA, 2020

This study sought to examine the perceptions of serving youth Corps members on the effectiveness ... more This study sought to examine the perceptions of serving youth Corps members on the effectiveness of the National Youth Service Corps scheme in Nigeria, specifically in the achievement of its objectives and implementation of its enabling principles in Ibadan Metropolis of Oyo State, Nigeria.
The experiential learning theory and open systems theory formed the research framework. The descriptive research design was adopted with the multi-stage sampling procedure to collect data from 995 youth Corps members in the five Local Government Areas of Ibadan Metropolis. One research instrument titled Corps Members Perceptions Questionnaire (CMPQ) was used. Four research questions were answered using descriptive statistics. Four hypotheses were tested at P < 0.05 using inferential statistics.
Findings revealed that there was no significant difference between male and female youth Corps members in their level of satisfaction as regard welfare services: deployment to places of primary assignment (PPA) (tcal = -0.87; P > 0.05), acceptance at PPA (tcal = -0.15; P > 0.05), payment of allowances (tcal = 0.44; P > 0.05), accommodation (tcal = -0.6; P > 0.05), and personal security (tcal = 1.38; P > 0.05). However, a significant difference existed between male and female youth Corps members in their level of satisfaction as regard hospitality of the host communities (tcal = -2.37; P < 0.05). Also, there was no significant difference between male and female youth Corps members as regard their opinion about the scheme’s achievement of its objectives (tcal = -1.96; P = 0.05) and implementation of its enabling principles (tcal = -1.63; P > 0.05). Furthermore, results showed that youth Corps members’ level of satisfaction with welfare services had significant joint influence (F(6, 742) = 271.63; P < 0.05) on their opinion about the effectiveness of the NYSC scheme. Of all the indicators of welfare services, security experienced (β = 0.03; P > 0.05) and acceptance at PPA (β = 0.00; P > 0.05) had no significant contribution to the opinion of youth Corps members about the effectiveness of the NYSC scheme, however, hospitality (β = 0.73; P < 0.05), deployment to PPA (β = 0.12; P < 0.05), payment of allowances (β = 0.10; P < 0.05) and accommodation (β = 0.08; P < 0.05) contributed significantly to the opinion of youth Corps members about the effectiveness of the NYSC scheme. Finally, findings indicated that, to some extent ( = 2.5 - 3.4), youth Corps members were satisfied with welfare services in the scheme. Also, the NYSC scheme has achieved its objectives to some extent ( = 2.73) and has implemented its enabling principles to a little extent ( = 2.37), and therefore, it has been effective to some extent ( = 2.61) in Ibadan Metropolis.
It was recommended that instead of abrogating the scheme, additional measures should be provided to ensure graduates above age 30 do not participate in the scheme. Also, youth Corps members should be posted outside their ethnic groups of origin. Finally, improvement in security and accommodation should be made.
