This study paper seeks to share light on the linkages between vulnerability and agricultural practices and outcomes as well as the coping strategies based on the perception of households using Wa East as a case study. It was found that the distribution of social services creates preconditions for vulnerability and that the use of traditional farming practices is still predominant. Household adopt problem-focus strategies to cope with the vulnerabilities of their environment. The adoption of sustainable agricultural system and redefinition of components of social contract are imperative at the local level.

This article seeks to share perspectives on the relevance of direct project or program support and the need to refrain from homogeneity in aid research by assessing the contribution of the Government of Ghana/European Union (GoG/EU) Micro-Projects Programme in the Nadowli District of Ghana from 1997–2009. The findings acknowledge positive impacts of the program in the district. There are sector consistencies between the donor interest and local development priorities in health, education and the water and sanitation sectors. However, selectivity of project within and among sectors brings potential conflicts of interest and tradeoffs between the program and local community needs. The results imply a reexamination of decentralized development through a lens of new partnership between donors’ interest and local needs. Stepping up community awareness to ensure full participation in project design, execution, operation, and maintenance could serve as a start-up platform for new partnerships. It is imperative to align donor interest with local realities, which prompts a rethinking of adoption of new project approaches such as co-development, design, and implementation.

The study relied on mixed methods with questionnaire administration as its main data collection technique focusing on the social, economic and environmental dimensions of slums. It found that, even among slum close neighbourhoods, the overall degree of vulnerability varies thereby representing a potential source of dynamic resource for small cites. Slums selected are less vulnerable to environmental issues than socioeconomic dimensions. The sustainability challenges therefore lie within the improvement of social and economic choices. An identification of place based capabilities, opportunities and localised constraints could serve as basis for designing of an appropriate planned intervention.

Slum dwellers’ choices of livelihood activities are restricted under various socio-economic and planning
constraints. Using mixed methods, this paper explored the conditions under which slum dwellers can maximize the prospects of their environment and minimize the challenges therein. The findings indicate that slum dwellers have diversity of livelihood assets and potentials, yet limited access to planned adaptation remains a main challenge. Many dwellers result to autonomous “supplementary occupations” to cope with the challenges of urbanization. It is therefore imperative
to redefine the mandate of urban planning, as a response to spontaneous urbanization, and to develop a tool for sustainable livelihood at the local level.

phenomenon among human societies. This study focuses on rural-urban migration with the aim of
identifying the socio-economic and cultural causes of rural-urban migration, the socio-economic and
cultural implications of migration from the study area to other areas of final destination, the coping
strategies adopted by the community members with the aim of discouraging rural urban migration,
what needs to be done to curb the movement from a community to other places. To this end the study
made use of both primary data and secondary data to source information from members of the study
community. Purposive sampling was used to select research participants, both key informants and
focus group participants’ from the entire population. Research participants revealed that the people of
Kpongu perceived development as provision of social infrastructure as well as improve standard of
living which is a motivating factor for migration. To most of the respondents, migration was positive
and brings about improved standard of living. It was revealed that some of the causes of rural-urban
migration in Kpongu include lack of economic opportunities, inadequate social amenities among
others. The study concluded with some measures put in place to mitigate migration as well as some
recommendation to help reduce migration from the study area to areas of final destination.

Key words: Rural-urban migration Kpongu community, rural community development.

in Ghana ha ve shifted attention to renewable energy sources including biofuel. Land - based
investments are therefore increasingly becoming attractive in Ghana and, over the years, many
foreign direct investments have acquired large parcels of land for biofuel crop production.
However, the current system of planning in Ghana is not ready to the remits of sustainable
development from energy perspective and landscape approach evidenced by the lack of policy
and institutional arrangement. This paper sought to explore the implications of biofuel crop
production on land - use planning through a review of selected case studies. It was found that the
land reforms and decentralized planning system are weak in addressing emerging trends of large
scale land acquisition at the local level. The institutional framework for land -use planning has
less provision for integrated energy planning and the current land -use practice favours only the
urban areas. It is therefore imperative to revise the guidelines for large scale land acquisition to
allow for decentralized energy planning, adoption of integrated energy -land use planning and
scaling -up the preparations of rural land use planning.
