Search and identification of sea mines or explosives are good examples of such activity. To achieve high capability of detection and correct identification, high accuracy and resolution are required. One of the valuable tools, that can be used for acoustic visualisation are side scan sonars. They are in use since early beginning of underwater activity, but it is only recently that applications of high frequency, high definition sonars are being investigated. First research results show a need regarding better understanding of equipment specification. The aim of a research, reflected in this paper, is to study possibilities of detection and identification of objects located on the sea bottom or slightly buried by means of a side-scaning sonar. The sonar considered is installed on Remotely Operated cable controlled Vehicle (ROV) or Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) that introduces important limitations to size, weight and power consumption of sonar system. Theoretical evaluation of sonar parameters and definition of information needed for detection and recognition of selected types of object are required for this purpose. For experimental evaluation of theoretical consideration typical industrial equipment has been selected. Tritech International Sea King Side Scan Sonar provides basic facilities. It is modified to allow direct comparison of two images obtained simultaneously from two transducers working at different frequencies.

It is followed by selection of navigation equipment required to achieve high resolution picture of searched area. As indicated in our former presentations, we are looking for resolution of 50 mm required to identify mine like objects. This regards objects resting on the bottom or buried in sediments. Two types of side scan sonars can be considered for detection and identification of bottom objects. Due to size, weight and power restrictions, a short range, high frequency sonar capabilities were found to be suitable for the task. Recent advances in SAS technology offer new capabilities regarding Search rate and resolution, but introduces additional requirements to a platform.

Four typical marine screws are utilised in the current design of the vehicle. One possible solution of the problem is the application of waterjet propulsors located inside the body of the vehicle instead. The general condition of the application of the new solution was to secure at least the same motion control capabilities of the vehicle while the basic capability is its propulsion effectiveness at the required speed. Specific features of the considered waterjet propulsor, when compared with their application in surface vessel propulsion, are the lack of the head losses and the low significance of cavitation issues. One of the difficulties in the considered case is the small diameter of the propulsor in comparison to commercially available waterjet units, which have diameters between 0.1 [m] and 1.0 [m]. There is very little data regarding the design and performance of devices in the 0.02 to 0.05 [m] range. Methods utilised to forecast the performance of the new propulsion system are presented and results compared. These were semi-empirical calculations, numerical calculations and tests of real devices. The algorithm that is based on semi-empirical calculations is of particular interest while it offers possibility quick assessment of performance of a propulsor composed of several well defined components. The results indicate the feasibility of modification of the propulsion system for the considered vehicle if all the existing circumstances are taken into account.

Oil spill incidents usually affect seriously the ecosystem and human life. Therefore, the treatment and recovery of the oil spill have been considered as an ultra-important issue to protect the environment and to minimize its negative impacts on socio-economic activities. Among methods of oil spill recovery, porous materials have emerged as potential absorbents possessing the capacity of absorbing spilled oil at a fast rate, high adsorption capacity, good selectivity, and high reusability. In this review paper, two types of polymer-based porous absorbents modified surface and structure were introduced for the treatment strategy of the oil-polluted water. In addition, the absorption mechanism and factors affecting the adsorption capacity for oils and organic solvents were thoroughly analyzed. More importantly, characteristics of polymer-based porous materials were discussed in detail based on microstructure analysis, absorption efficiency, and reusability. In general, this paper has provided an overview and a comprehensive assessment of the use of advanced polymer-based porous materials for the treatment of oil-polluted water, although the impacts of environmental factors such as wind, wave, and temperature should be further investigated in the future.

It is intended for bottom located object search and identification. To evaluate sonar imaging capability expressed by its resolution, several parameters were investigated. First group of parameters regards the sonar itself, while the second regards an object material and dimensions and shape. Their cross-influence was investigated for different distances from hydrophone to an object of interest and different hydrophone elevation angles. Experiments were performed in a shallow water laboratory tank.

More interestingly, a strategic tendency in seaport advancement has been to manage the seaport system using a model which balances environmental volatility and economic development demands. An energy efficient management system is regarded as being vital for meeting the strict rules aimed at reducing the environmental pollution caused by port facility activities. Moreover, the enhanced supervision of port system operating methods and technical resolutions for energy utilisation also raise significant issues. In addition, low-carbon ports, as well as green port models, are becoming increasingly popular in seafaring nations. This study comprises a comprehensive assessment of operational methods, cutting-edge technologies for sustainable generation, storage, and transformation of energ...

The design is based on experience gained during 15 years of exploitation of the Ukwial ROV and development of Gluptak single shot mine hunting systems. The design goal was to multiply capabilities of the Ukwial without increasing weight and dimensional envelope. The vehicle is composed around powerful propulsion system that gives the system basic PVDS capability and mine disposal in strong currents. The modularization is achieved by application of a dedicated work modules equipped for reconnaissance, search, object identification, mine hunting and engineering tasks. The ROV system is designed to be a stand-alone mine hunting system or to be a component of an integrated mine hunting system composed of AUVs and a single shot mine destruction vehicles. While the vehicle system is designed to be portable, it can be operated both from dedicated naval ships as well as small vessels of opportunity. The features are advantageous for many smal...

In fact, ocean surface was considered mainly as medium suitable for transport of persons and goods as well as aggression and robbery. More practical attempts to live “on” the water surface are limited to well protected internal waters. The presented concept of “an underwater-above water accommodation, especially for residential purposes” proposes a possible solution. It was developed under the name of “Water Discus”. To some extent it is a response to expressed requirements of potential operators as well ideas of European Commision regarding development of the “blue economy” (doc COM (2014) 254). Several basic research and design experiments were required to achieve current understanding of the concept requirements..

In practice, to make the idea of articulated head vehicle working, specific solutions are required. To meet these requirements shaped charge was designed to be effective against very close targets that mean ability to initiate detonation of a mine explosive. It assures that a distance required forming a projectile with velocity well above 4 km/s is minimized. While the charge was developed from scratch, computer simulation methods were used to optimize geometry of the charge components. General geometry (caliber), application of a metal lining, geometry of the lining and casing material was investigated to obtain high volume and high velocity of cumulation jet products. Due to specific application influence of water body around the charge was also studied. The simulation results were verified in life tests of the charge prototypes as well as in life operations against real mines.

INTRODUCTION Dept. of Underwater Technology conducts research, development and testing of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for over 10 years. One of the critical problems influencing the performance and safety of ROV systems is behaviour of power and communication cables linking underwater vehicle and surface support vessel. One of the main tasks of our project was a development of the computer simulation programme for ROV tethers in 3-D water flow. The programme role is to simulate behaviour of the ROV tethers for certain border conditions in the most reliable way. In order to verify the results of the computer simulat...

As result a program named DVCAD is proposed. It aids designer work in most creative phases of its work. While intended principally for submersibles, the approach can be adopted for work with other complex systems which can be described as well known in principles but of arrangement difficult to define. This would however require changes in expert procedures and component database. Paper describes principal problems which must be solved to balance requirements for high flexibility, easy to read graphical interface, real time operation and software as well as hardware limitations.
