The Nazis' bid for a European empire was as much a conquest for raw materials as it was an expans... more The Nazis' bid for a European empire was as much a conquest for raw materials as it was an expansion of 'race and space.' 1 Among the raw materials that the German leadership hoped to plunder was oil, a resource that Germany lacked. Germany's shortage of oil and the Nazis' quest to achieve oil security affected the course of the war and was a contributing factor in the ultimate collapse of the Third Reich. Tracing and analyzing Nazi oil policy furthermore illustrates how Nazi ideology, combined with hubris and wishful thinking, affected the way Nazi leadership pursued practical objectives.
