About us
Founded by survivors of Liberia’s civil war, Last Mile Health’s mission is to save lives in the world’s most remote communities. We partner with governments to build strong community health systems that equip professionalized community health workers to provide essential, primary healthcare to rural and remote communities. We work side-by-side with Ministries of Health in Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, and Sierra Leone, and globally to transform community health financing through Africa Frontline First.

"Natural disasters only make our communities more desperate for support that only community health workers can provide.” – margaret odera, community health worker & advocate, Kenya On this #COP29 Health Day, we honor the work of #CHWs like Margaret. They are already serving as critical responders to the health impacts of climate change, including disrupted care from natural disasters, disease outbreaks like cholera, malnutrition exacerbated by drought, and more. In this climate & health event recap from #UNGA79, hear from CHWs and health leaders ➡ https://bit.ly/3UO92Cu. Thanks to our partners on this event, including Macquarie Group, Johnson & Johnson, Seed Global Health, Partners In Health, Community Health Impact Coalition, and mothers2mothers.
“The climate crisis is a health crisis”: Reflections on the critical role of community health workers in a changing climate - Last Mile Health https://lastmilehealth.org - On World Pneumonia Day, Last Mile Health joined the Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia of Health and other partners at an event highlighting our shared work to address pneumonia, a leading cause of death for children under five in Ethiopia and part of community health workers' training in child health. Alongside the Ministry, we are working to equip Ethiopia's community health workforce with the training and tools they need to diagnose, treat, and refer patients--and ensure every child receives the care they need.
- 70% of community health workers globally are women, and they are a lifeline for patients in rural and remote communities. But they urgently need equal pay, gender-responsive training, guaranteed safety, and opportunities for advancement. When we say “make professional #CHWs the norm,” we’re not talking about replacing dedicated women who have worked tirelessly in tough conditions. We're talking about supporting them. Supporting them to deliver the best possible care to their patients—via salaries, skills, supervision, and supplies. Here’s how to achieve that: https://bit.ly/womenCHWs Integrate Health Last Mile Health - Our quarterly newsletter is live! In 2023, Last Mile Health and Integrate Health committed to working with African Ministries of Health to strengthen and sustain gender-responsive community health worker programs across four countries and develop and disseminate lessons learned that can inform other countries on their journey. Today, their team published 16 recommendations for governments and partners to take action in ensuring women community health workers are safe, supported, and fairly compensated so they can deliver the lifesaving care their patients need. Women make up 70% of the community health workforce—but they face unequal pay, risks to their safety, and limited opportunities for advancement. For the women who deliver lifesaving care in the world's most vulnerable communities, this must change.
