The analysis of the project of the Garden City of S’Agaró (1916-1926), together with its promotional documentation, al-lows us to relate the construction of the spaces destined to tourism and the process of resignification of them in the framework of the confrontations and convergences between the Catalan regionalist policies and the nationalist ones promoted by the Franco regime. The result will show how the tourist imaginary was staged and materialized in Catalonia, in close correspondence with the emergence of the modern consumer society.

Barcelona in particular became a laboratory of 'commercial renewal', when ideas regardind public space, infrsatructure and the 'compact city' governed the discourse of urban renewal. In Barcelona shopping center thus became new points of centrality; destinations for leisure and shopping, and landmarks. This chapter places these urban commercial initiatives within international retail history and argues that in Barcelona the development of shopping centers contributes to the formation of a metropolitan city, while the typology was cleverly adpated to the cutlure of public space in the Mediterranean city.

Such a measure wouldinclude open municipal markets (OMMs) because of their role in promoting the socialnature of the agroecological transitions. In rural areas, OMMs managed by publicadministrations are facing a major crisis. This paper aims to decipher the claims ofthe actors involved in the OMM crisis and to focus on strategies that could be takenby municipalities. Semistructured questionnaires, direct observations, and participa-tive workshops with stallholders, consumers, local producers, and the researchersof the university were used to analyze social relationships within the framework ofOMMs in the Province of Girona, Catalonia. The actors revealed a lack of connec-tion between collectives and within the same group of stallholders. The absence ofshared aspirations, along with the scant interest of public bodies in investing in themarkets or recognizing their economic and social role, have all contributed to thecurrent decline in OMMs. Open municipal markets are an active asset that are at riskof being abandoned in remote rural areas. There are fewer studies exploring public food markets as cultural and social capital with a view to improving the local and new-endogenous economy, an economy which not only involves the environment, but also the sociality linked to the tradition of food production. Journal of Cleaner Production, 2020

In recent years, the role that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) could play in advancing participatory planning has been widely acknowledged. The literature suggests that several factors are affecting the introduction of DPP into smart city planning. This study examines organization-related and society-related factors, aiming at identifying the level of maturity towards the introduction of DPP in cities, with particular attention to small European cities. These two groups of factors were examined in Schiedam, Netherlands via a mixed-methods approach and analyzed using NVIVO and SPSS software. The results suggest that for cities to be mature enough to introduce DPP, there should be an existing good practice of conventional participatory planning where the concept is extensively practiced, as well as a relatively high trust in the community engagement processes and sufficiently high digital technology literacy among the residents. Thus, maturity levels in cities should be assessed and policies should be developed accordingly to ensure a successful transition toward sustainable smart cities, in light of the findings reported in this study.

One of the most recent debates in this context is digital citizen participation. This study aimed to identify the potential role of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in citizen participation as a major contributor towards ‘smart sustainable cities’. A systematic and exhaustive literature review, coupled with critical content analysis, was conducted. The focus was on a central research question: What kind of relationship is fostered in the literature between sustainability and digital citizen participation, and how can ICT contribute to social sustainability through digital citizen participation (DCP)? The results suggested a connection between smart sustainable cities and DCP. This article is concluded by emphasizing the role of ICT in citizen participation processes and its significant contribution to social sustainability and the creation of more-than-human smart cities.

The history of the development of the covered market systems in Barcelona during the 19th and 20th centuries shows how the parameter of security - thought of in terms of controls on merchandise hygiene, prices, habits, and routines of different social groups- has been one of the predominant factors in the construction of the "city of services" in which we still live. An analysis of the basic stages of the development of the market system in Barcelona -considering the parameter of security in economic, cultural, political and social contexts- demonstrates how security is now linked to social sustainability and ecology.

Town Planning Review, 2015

The first International Seminar Touristic Territories hosted by the University of Girona and with... more The first International Seminar Touristic Territories hosted by the University of Girona and with the theme 'Touristic imagery and the construction of contemporary landscape', took place on 23-25 January in Girona, Spain. The substantial growth encountered in tourism clearly marks it as one of the most remarkable economic and social phenomena of not only the 20th century but also the 21st century. While these dynamics have converted tourism into one of the principal driving forces behind economic and urban development, such mass tourism also poses a threat to the natural and cultural resources of regions. Architects and urban planners have not been paying attention to the effects of mass tourism on architecture and urban planning. However, despite tourism being a resilient sector in large national and post-industrial economies in this critical period of recession, the general demise of cultural and natural resources must be taken into account and the multiple effects should be studied. The conference sought to explore the impact of tourism on the transformation of cities and territory. Hosted by the University of Girona, the three-day seminar had a strong emphasis on evaluating the impact that tourism imagery, infrastructure and architecture conceived for tourism has had on the formation of modern territory and the subsequent consequences on the theoretical discourse on planning and architecture. The organisers, Nadia Fava and Marisa Garcia Vergara, who are town planning and architecture historians at the University of Girona, envisaged that the theme of 'Tourism and its impact on cities and landscapes in the face of changing contexts', would provide a broad thematic overview for discussion concerning the various current issues in urban planning today.Girona, as the capital of the northeast province of Catalonia and as the geographic centre of the Costa Brava touristic region, is a fitting location to explore the varied regional impacts that have resulted from the arduous development of tourism. In the 1950s the Spanish government and local entrepreneurs identified the Costa Brava as being highly suitable for substantial development as a holiday destination; one that would be aimed mainly at the package holiday tourist from Northern Europe. The region's potential was exploited with the construction of large numbers of hotels and apartments to create these so-called seaside resorts. As a result, tourism rapidly took over from fishing and agriculture as the principal income of the area, radically changing the territory and its landscape. This was not to be the only major change, as cultural and social customs and behaviours were also altered as a result of the influx of visitors and the human exchanges that came with them.Conference organisations and contributionsThe conference sought to encourage cross-cultural, inter-disciplinary debate and problem-oriented studies related to the broad advancement of research in the field of tourism connected to urban planning and architecture practice and theory. Over the three days nearly 100 participants gave presentations on and discussed the theme of 'Tourism and territory'. As the congress provided a forum on the operational dimensions and meanings of tourism, this meant that there were not only academic participants, but also policy practitioners from across Europe and America participating as well. The conference had five major themes along with eight discussion sessions. Complementing the track sessions, the programme also included plenary sessions and round-table discussions together with social events and guided tours around the city. Details of the conference programme, papers and abstracts are available on the conference website Touristic Territories: http://territoriosdelturismo.blogspot.com.es/ (accessed on 1 April 2014).The Preliminary Proceedings can be downloaded from DUGI Open Access Repository: http://dugi-doc.udg.edu//handle/10256/8798. …

The pandemic spread of COVID-19 grew inexorably to be the main topic of global news after it was ... more The pandemic spread of COVID-19 grew inexorably to be the main topic of global news after it was first identified in 2019 in China. This article analyzes how heads of state and heads of government in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden framed the problems and solutions to the spread of the virus during the pandemic's initial phase. A Foucauldian-inspired method of problematization guides the narrative analysis, complemented by governmentality, risk communication, and taskscape theories. The results of the analysis show how the individual is conceptualized as a central actor and whose practices are framed as crucial to overcoming the crisis. Through invoking a sense of responsibility, sacrifice, and current life during the pandemic as a difficult time, the speeches allude to how people through changed behavior can/sould, contribute to the greater good. The individual is positioned as a key cause of, and solution to the problem; however, construing the individual as an indispensable actor to overcoming the crisis also means that the individual is laid open for reprehension. To facilitate the spread of the containment message and to support individual understanding of overt risk, the four countries' leadership also augment their conceptualization of the crisis with ideas of national identity to inspire the individual to contribute to the "battle" and "defeat" of the virus. The leadership does also embrace the important role of the national government in controlling the outbreak and the role of science, and trust in science, are also emphasized. The speeches analyzed in this paper can be understood as governance technologies; the spatial disciplining and self-governance demanded by the regimes create subject positions for individuals or groups. A debate on the rights and responsibilities of the citizen is another aspect that comes to the fore, considering how the containment strategies in all four countries proclaim the individual as a core agent in circumscribing the virus, and hence the individual's activities as potentially damaging to the fight against the pandemic. This throws into question the connection between individual autonomy as a democratic right and disciplinary mechanisms, sometimes phrased encouragingly and at other times in an enforcing way.

What remains absent is a comprehensive overview that encapsulates the interdisciplinary dimensions of this area of research. In response, this study comprehensively investigates gastronomy tourism literature utilising a network and content analysis, with an aim to map the main subject areas concerned with gastronomy tourism and relations between varying subject areas. In doing so, themes determining gastronomy tourism and focus for future exploration are identified. The review findings suggest that the trajectory of gastronomy tourism research is characterized by the dominance of 'tourism, leisure and hospitality management' and 'geography, planning and development'. Three recommendations are proposed to assist development of gastronomy tourism research: increase...

Research paper thumbnail of Communicating About COVID-19 in Four European Countries: Similarities and Differences in National Discourses in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden

Frontiers in Communication: Political communication and society, 2020

There are fewer studies exploring public food markets as cultural and social capital with a view to improving the local and new-endogenous economy, an economy which not only involves the environment, but also the sociality linked to the tradition of food production. Research on public markets in small provincial towns is scarce, particularly the role they play in maintaining the urban-rural relationship by providing a local food supply, and also in constructing the rural landscape. This case study concerns the province of Girona and its nine public markets halls. The aim of the study is to explore their role as a public service within the territory and the agricultural landscape, the communication system, the local gastronomic culture and economic culture, this apparently being more resilient and stable than the economy of scale.

Research paper thumbnail of The impact of tourism on retailing structure: San Feliu de Guixols, Costa Brava, Spain

The literature on food geography, has begun to develop a solid corpus, however, less research has been done on the impact tourism has on the retailing structure of tourist cities, which can provide a measure of a city’s changing functionality and use.
Food retail location throughout a city’s history can be used to map and analyze how this has affected the patterns of historic retail trends over time. An analysis of produce suppliers corroborated that food markets group together vendors in core areas and provide good facilities, easy accessibility and centrality for location involved. Within this conceptual
framework, this research outlines the possibilities for tourists to have access to local foods through these retail outlets and how this changes the morphology of food retail location.
The case in point is Sant Feliu de Guíxols, now a mature tourist city on the Costa Brava in Spain. Findings suggest that food market here is a historic hub for food supply and is still the core of food retailing today. However, the effect of tourism and its consequent urban growth has resulted in a new commercial pole.
