Reproducible Example
import pandas as pd
a = pd.DataFrame({"ID": [1, 2, 2], "a": [3, 4, 5]}) b = pd.DataFrame({"ID2": [1, 2], "b": [7, 8]}) a = a.set_index("ID") b = b.set_index("ID2") a = a.join(b) print(a.index.name)
Issue Description
Left joining on an index with non-unique values in dataframe "a" resets the name of the index to None
