Adam Kovac, Author at Gizmodo (original) (raw)
Adam Kovac is a freelance journalist based in New York City. Born in Montreal, Canada, he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Concordia University. He spent most of his career in his home city, covering local news and dabbling in music journalism for outlets like Guitar World and Rolling Stone. While covering the local fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to pivot and completed a Master of Arts degree in science journalism at Columbia University. His master's project, a magazine-length feature about an effort to update the legal definition of death in the United States, was a runner-up for the prestigious Best Thesis award. Since then, he's covered online extremism for The Forward, and worked as a science reporter at The Messenger, while contributing articles to outlets that include The Daily Beast and National Geographic. He's passionate about covering bioethics, the natural world, astronomy, and space exploration. Before turning to journalism, he spent years as the guitarist in a number of not particularly successful hard rock bands, including a pop-punk tribute band called Finding Emo. Now, he just plays on his couch for fun.
