The centre piece of the volume is a discussion of the archaeological investigation of the site which has led to a dramatic new interpetation of the battle which is reflected in the visitor centre and revised battlefield interpretation unveiled in 2008.

Using historical documents and the results of an extensive archaeological investigation the author establishes the actual location, which matches that proposed by Christison in the 1960s and therefore brings this long debate to an end. The author also presents a fresh rationale for Robert Bruce's actions over the two days of the battle, proposing that the Scottish commander initially hoped for a replay of the Battle of Loudon Hill (1307), but after Edward II refused to take the bait settled for an action which has much in common with the Battle of Stirling Bridge (1297).

Each chapter of the book presents a clear understanding of the events and causes of each battle, before its aftermath is considered. The personalities, armies, weapons and tactics involved are described; the archaeological techniques explained; and the groundbreaking results and their impact on our understanding of events discussed. With their popular mix of narrative, clarity, keen eye for observation and sense of humour, Tony Pollard and Neil Oliver capture the drama, action and tragedy of past events and provide an insight into some of the bloodiest episodes of British history.
