It was was established by a resolution of the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party (VKPb) and became the first anti-religious museum in the USSR. Being recognized as a Research Institution of National Importance by the Council of People's Commissars in 1934 the Museum performed a variety of important functions on aggregating data about provincial museums, developing guidelines on methodology of anti-religious museum work, organizing field works and study of religious practices of the USSR ethnic groups. As a result, by the late 1930s, the Museum developed from anti-religious propaganda establishment into research center and was renamed the Central Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism.

In total they represent a complete block of field observations made by the researcher during his trips to the Caucasus in 1929—1940. These observations were aimed at registering the current state of religiosity of the peoples of Dagestan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Nagorny Karabakh. They also shed light on a new page of the life of this remarkable scholar connected to his collaboration with the Central Anti-Religious Museum in Moscow, and to the period of his expeditionary activity — 1930s. Unlike his expeditionary period of 1940s, the previous decade of his activities has not become the subject of the thorough study till now.

Vashkevich (1865–1902) and S.D. Bondarʹ (1902–1917). These files contain a comprehensive collection of information based on both regular reports and answers to official requests in various departments and provinces of Russian Empire, and on data relating to frequent instances of official travel. This information allowed officials to analyze data about the current condition of non‑Orthodox churches, religious organizations and mi‑ nority religious groups, to draw conclusions about the particulars of Russian confessional legislation, to identify practical difficulties in ap‑ plying such legislation, and to conduct investigations. The results of these investigations were reflected in numerous publications devoted to historical, sociological, and anthropological questions.

The studied portion of the noted is stored in the archives of the State Museum of History of Religion (Saint-Petersburg). These commentators possess higher or lower level of learning in Confucian classics and traditional literature; some of them are industry insiders with good knowledge of pictures' meanings. The paper views their notes as a representation of 'the greater culture' evaluation or commenting on 'the minor culture' of the popular prints. Closer reading of the mentors' notes reveals their intention to show off rudimentary knowledge of the classics, which is not always relevant to the content or questions raised by V. Alekseev.

M. Alekseev (1881—1951). Manuscripts from the Archive identified as belonging to V. M. Alekseev have not been studied and published before. Their research resulted in the systematization and description of V. M. Alekseev's materials. For instance, it has been discovered that V. M. Alekseev's archives at SMHR include fragmented handwritten and typed materials in Chinese, Uighur, Russian, and English dated to 1907—1940s that have undergone preliminary classification by the academician himself. The analysis of the manuscripts demonstrates that two categories of documents have the greatest potential for further research: so called “Chinese diary” kept by the scholar during his expedition around North China and written explanations of Chinese popular woodblock prints nianhua provided by Alekseev's mentors xiangshengs.

Palestine Society in 1917–1954
The article is devoted to the history of the transfer of the book collection of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society (founded in 1887) to the academic Library of the State Museum of History of Religion. The authors managed to trace the fate of the collection by gathering documents in archives (Moscow RAS Archive, St. Petersburg branch of the RAS Archive, the archive of the Institute of History of the Material Culture, the Orientalists' Archive of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts). Published documents allow to reconstruct main stages of the history of the transfer of the book collection (1920–1954), as well as to trace the dynamics of its qualitative and quantitative composition.
