In this paper, intrinsic properties and research on software defined cognitive radio (SDCR) are presented. Firstly brief introduction of Cognitive Radio is given along with its architecture. Then spectrum management of Cognitive Radio ad hoc networks (CRAHNs) and their main features like spectrum sensing, spectrum decision, spectrum selection and spectrum mobility are defined. At the end, Software Defined Cognitive Radio (SDCR), its hardware and software platform, along with research topics on SDCR are defined

To find out the effect of static stretching on hamstring flexibility, to find out the prevalence of limited hamstring flexibility. 140 (70 males and 70 females) school going children were selected from government school who met the selection criteria were equally divided into control and experimental groups. The control group received no intervention while the experimental group received static stretching session for hamstrings. Hamstrings flexibility was measured using Sit and Reach Test (SRT) and Inclinometer measuring Hip Joint Angle (HJA). Significance of difference between control group and experimental group were measured using t-test using SPSS (21st version). Significance level was set at p ≤ 0.01. Experimental group showed significant improvements in term of SRT (t = 25.219, p ≤ 0.0001) and HJA for both right leg (t = 13.405, p ≤ 0.0001)&left leg (t = 10.070, p ≤ 0.0001). Results of present study indicate that static stretching is effective in improving hamstring flexibility in school children.

Research paper thumbnail of Aluminium-induced enhancement of ageing-related biochemical and electrophysiological parameters in rat brain regions

Indian journal of biochemistry & biophysics, 2003

We investigated alterations in the ageing-related parameters: multiple-unit action potentials, Na... more We investigated alterations in the ageing-related parameters: multiple-unit action potentials, Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity, glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activity, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, lipid peroxidation and lipofuscin contents in the brain regions cerebral cortex, striatum, hippocampus and thalamus, resulting from the chronic administration of aluminium chloride (AlCl3) in drinking water to rats of 6 and 12 months of age. Aluminium treatment significantly depressed Na(+), K(+)-ATPase, GST and GPx activities, elevated lipid peroxidation and lipofuscin contents, and produced intense epileptiform activity in the electroencephalograms of the studied brain regions together with a concomitant increase in the multiple-unit action potentials (MUA) indicating a vigorous neuronal epileptic hyperactivity. Taken together the aluminium-induced alterations in these parameters are indicative of an accelerated ageing process.

To investigate the association of gallstone disease with change in intestinal motility and how motility alters serum bile acid (SBA) levels. A total of 333 subjects were enrolled, of which 183 were GS patients and 150 age-matched and sex-matched controls. Intestinal transit time was assessed by measuring orocecal transit time (OCTT). Breath tests were used to evaluate OCTT and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Total SBA levels were measured by enzymatic colorimetric assay. A linear regression analysis was performed to look for interrelationship between OCTT and SBA levels. Orocecal transit time was significantly delayed (P<0.001) in GS patients (134.8±30.64 min) compared with controls (85.35±19.81 min). SIBO was observed to be significantly higher (P<0.01) in patients (15%) compared with controls (0.7%). OCTT was further delayed significantly…

Therefore, a study was planned to compare LBT with glucose breath test (GBT) to diagnose SIBO in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients and controls. Methods: 175 diarrhea-predominant IBS patients and 150 apparently healthy controls were enrolled. IBS was diagnosed according to Rome II criteria. Breath samples were collected every 10 min up to 180 min. Breath H2 and CH4 were measured using an SC MicroLyzer. SIBO was positive with a sustained increase in breath H2 or CH4 or both ≥10 ppm over a baseline value within <90 min in case of LBT and within <120 min in GBT. Results: SIBO was positive in 60/175 (34.3%) patients by lactulose and in 11/175 (6.2%) patients by GBT. In controls, LBT was positive for SIBO in 45/150 (30%) patients and in 1/150 (0.66%) patients by GBT. Positive LBT for SIBO was not significantly different in patients and...

She also had hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, and an elevated parathyroid hormone level of 17.2 pmol ⁄ L (normal range 1.05–6.84). Calcium-phosphate product was slightly elevated to 4.46mmol ⁄ L (< 4.44 mmol ⁄ L). She was not obese, did not have diabetes, and was not on any anticoagulant therapy. Histopathologically, the specimen from abdominal nodule showed calcium deposits within the medium-sized vessels in the subcutaneous fat and inside walls of the fat cells (Fig. 1b). A diagnosis of calcific uraemic arteriolopathy (CUA) was made. Surgical debridement was perfomed after the patient’s general state had been improved. A wide and deep excision was made, down to the fascia level. The wounds were successfully closed without using a graft. After surgery, the patient had no pain, and made a good recovery without new lesions (Fig. 2). CUA was first described as calciphylaxis by Hans Selye in 1962; the term calcific uraemic arteriolopathy is now preferred. CUA is mainly seen in patients with endstage renal disease, and manifests as a rapidly developing purpuric patch or plaque. Although a high mortality rate of 30–80% has been reported, a recent report showed that CUA has several clinical presentations, including a more indolent variant. Patients with proximal lesions tend to have a poorer prognosis because of secondary infection. Kang et al. reported a better prognosis in patients who underwent skin debridement than patients who did not. Calcium-phosphate product deposits into adipose cells may contribute to the pain experienced. The areas of vascular calcification often extend past the clinical boundary of the CUA plaques, so a wide excision containing peripheral grossly normal skin is needed. Other treatment options have been reported, including diet, binding agents, and vitamin D analogues. Parathyroidectomy is recommended only if severe hyperparathyroidism persists despite these therapies. Some reports suggest the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen and corticotherapy for local wound care. We propose that wide local excision should be taken into consideration as the first-line treatment of CUA. It will decrease the intractable pain of CUA and the possibility of secondary infection, contributing to better prognosis.
