PDA is a computer-based data analysis that uses Product Data Management (PDM) databases as its operational databases. The study examines 20 product design projects in the experiment, which are prepared to follow same product development process by using an identical PDM system. The design result in the PDM database is assessed and analysed by On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and data mining tools in PDA. The assesment and analysis reveals the lateness in creation of 3D CAD models as the main reason of the failure.

A product data model is also proposed for the propagation procedure, which integrates base product definitions for product design, and product data views for other manufacturing or customer support. The product data view in the proposed model enables manufacturing or customer support engineers to define their own product data views, without copying the existing product definition. Integrated with other components, the engineering changes in the data model provide structure-oriented change history, effectivity management for production, and integration with product configurations. Based on the integrated product data model, the proposed procedure propagates engineering changes to product data views using the history of product structure changes. The propagation procedure maintains consistency of product data during collaboration between various design, manufacturing and customer support departments, who have different product data views. Prototype database applications together with an example of illustrative change propagation are also presented.

Its open database with relational tables enables existing common application programs such as Microsoft office suites to access product data in PDM systems. In addition, the interactive query processor provided by database management systems helps design engineers to build ad hoc queries in standard SQL database language to response different data requirements during their product development. The PDM architecture with the open database allows design engineers or technical staffs in SMBs to build and maintain their application programs for product development by themselves. To show the feasibility of the proposed architecture, this study implemented a prototype PDM system based on the architecture and database, and represents real-world product data with the implemented PDM system.

To enhance collaboration for product design, this study integrates SM with a product data management (PDM) system that manages main product development processes and data in manufacturing companies. This study proposes a text messaging SM model that shares core components of PDM systems and uses product structures in PDM systems as networks for SM broadcasting. The SM model is implemented with a research purpose PDM system and applied to product design experiments to show feasibility of the proposed SM model in PDM systems.

The framework is proposed for the information-driven CIM system that integrates engineering constraints as well as its data. It resolves problems of the existing application-odentad constraint maintenance in which constraints are scattered in heterogeneous applications. It is possible due to the integrated management of constraints on a database using triggers, that is, on an "active" database. Existing active object-oriented databases, however, cannot propedy support certain constraints that are specified on a set of classes. Those are the cases where the constraints must be maintained in the forward direction along a class composition hierarchy as well as in the backward direction. We call these kinds of problems "backward propagation problems" and investigate several approaches to resolve them using currently available techniques. Based on an approach which uses virtual classes, a new constructor, called CONSTRAINTCCH is proposed to support the backward propagation. Advantages of the proposed framework and the constructor for the backward propagation are demonstrated on a design constraint management that supports a control panel design.

The robot can report moving images of remote places and navigate there autonomously. In addition it can be controlled by remote users through wireless internet. Even the control program for the robot can be updated by the remote users during the regular operation mode. This paper provides a consistent product data model and generic product development processes that can support the development of the robot, a convergence of various hardware and software parts. It also includes discussions and experiences about the development of the convergence product.

The representation adopts and extends the structure-oriented approach for managing EC data. Tightly integrated with product structure, it will enable designers to maintain and exchange consistent EC data throughout the product life cycle. To support operations for ECs properly, the representation provides the data, operations, and event-condition-action rules for nested ECs and simultaneous EC application to multiple options. In addition, the EC objects proposed in the representation integrate the data and integrity constraints into a unified repository. This repository will enable designers to access all EC data and integrity constraints through the product structure and relationships between EC objects. The paper also describes a prototype product data management system based on the proposed representation to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Previous attempts to automate product configurations concentrate on representations and management of the knowledge for specific domains in fixed and isolated computing environments. Since the knowledge about product configurations is subject to continuous change and hard to express, these attempts often failed to efficiently manage and exchange the knowledge in collaborative product development. In this paper, XML Topic Map (XTM) is introduced to represent and exchange the knowledge about product configurations in collaborative product development. A product configuration model based on XTM along with its merger and inference facilities enables configuration engineers In collaborative product development to manage and exchange their knowledge efficiently. An implementation of the proposed product configuration model is presented to demonstrate that the propose...
