Towards the mid-20th century, dazzling changes took place in every aspect of daily life. Myths cr... more Towards the mid-20th century, dazzling changes took place in every aspect of daily life. Myths created in post-war Europe were marketed to the world through mass media. The myths about how the city and the city dweller should be, were created through the picture magazines. The perception of modernity, which is shaped mostly by commercial purposes, myths and fetishism, spread easily all over the world through visual media. Undoubtedly, one of the most benefited sectors in these developments is the fashion. While the world famous brands were being created, the photography sector became an integral part of fashion for the promotion of their products. In particular, fashion and advertising photography were used to attract female consumers and male gaze thanks to the manipulative power of photography . Within all these developments, clothing culture began to take shape in the direction of myths and commercial aims. However, even in this great fashion and clothing industry, individuals choose clothes towards their self-perceptions. This essay will focus on how dress cultures are shaped (especially after twentieth-century) by mass media, commercial goals, individual choices, group identities, economic, social and political reasons, and the role of photography in these developments. It will be pointed out the meaning of dress cultures according to viewers and exemplified perception differences according to regions with David Miller's research (2010). It will also refer to how people's personal liking can be changed out of their request through photographs. It will be finalized with the point reached of the recent fashion, advertising and street photography.
