Methods: In this review study, the causes of HMB were assembled from reliable books of Persian Medicine (PM). To compare with new scientific evidence, the HMB characteristics were searched using databases including PubMed, Google Scholar and Scopus as well as valid references of current medicine books. Results: The causes of HMB in PM, similar to current medicine, are divided into three categories including functional, structural and drugs. Functional and drug causes in both schools of medicine are almost concordant. In the structural category, we can consider the presence of a mass in uterus, cervix, and vagina, as mentioned in PM, equivalent with polyps and leiomyomas. Also in PM, mucosal disturbances in this tissues match cervicitis and vaginitis properties. For some causes mentioned in PM such as Akele, Hekke, and weakness of uterus and its tissues, no equivalent was available in current medicine. Conclusions: There are more similarities in menstrual bleeding in both current and Persian Medicine. In some cases, patients present with HMB for which there is no known cause in current medicine. In these cases, the etiologies mentioned in Persian Medicine and their treatment can be used. Monthly menstrual bleeding plays an important role in women's physical and mental health. Among menstrual dysfunctions, heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is a significant problem, and it is known as excessive volume or duration of menstrual bleeding . So that, 30% of women in reproductive ages suffer from it, and one third are definitively

This review focuses on medicinal plants mentioned by Avicenna, a great Iranian philosopher and physician (A.D. 980-1037), in his book Canon for treatment of AUB. Methods Medicinal plants mentioned in Canon for treatment of AUB were elicited and searched in electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Cochrane library to find studies that confirmed their efficacy. Data were collected for the years 1980-2014. Results The findings included 23 plants belonging to 18 families. Scientific findings have revealed that these plants control AUB through four mechanisms of action including inhibition of inflammatory process, inhibition of prostaglandins production, antiproliferative activity on human cervical cancer cells (HeLa), and estrogenic activity. All of the plants exhibited anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and/ or in vivo. Cuscuta chinensis and Portulaca oleracea exhibited estrogenic activity. Boswellia carteri, Lens culinaris, Myrtus communis, Polygonum aviculare, Pistacia lentiscus, and Punica granatum have revealed inhibitory activity on biosynthesis of prostaglandins. Some of the mentioned plants including: Ceratonia siliqua, Cuscuta chinensis, Cuscuta epithymum, Cydonia oblonga, Paeonia sp., Portulaca oleracea, Solanum nigrum, Rumex acetosa and Onopordum acanthium have shown antiproliferative activity on HeLa cells. Conclusion Investigation of traditional Iranian medicine literatures can lead to the identification of effective natural medicines for the management of AUB; however, conclusive confirmation of the efficacy and safety of these treatments needs more evaluations.

Symptoms of vaginal atrophy include dryness, itching, bleeding, and dyspareunia. According to Traditional Persian Medicine (TPM), the using of moisturizing plants can treat dry mucous membranes. TPM suggests the use of marshmallow (Alcea angulata) to moisturize dry mucus with its mucilage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Alcea on the treatment of vaginal atrophy. This double-blind, clinical trial was conducted on 60 postmenopausal women with vaginal atrophy (40 – 65 years of age). The patients were randomly assigned into two groups of treatment and control (n = 30). The treatment group received Alcea vaginal suppository 5% (125 mg), and the control group received placebo. Both groups used suppositories every night for two weeks and every other night for six weeks. Vaginal Maturation Value (VMV), symptoms of vaginal atrophy, and pH were compared before and after the intervention. Data we...

The aim of this study is to investigate the traditional and modern uses of marshmallow in children and adults. This study was a narrative review, in which the medicinal properties of marshmallow were collected from credible pharmacopeias and therapeutic books of Traditional Medicine (TM). Further, electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Magiran, and Web of Science were explored for this purpose. Marshmallow has been prescribed in various forms such as tablet, syrup, gargle, vaginal suppository, vaginal douche, rectal enema, as well as ophthalmic and nasal drop for different diseases by PM scholars. Some of its traditional effects including anti-inflammatory, antitussive, anti-infective, and anti-pyretic properties have been confirmed in new studies. Phytochemical investigations revealed that the whole part of marshmallow cont...

According to studies, traditional medicine interventions along with conventional medicine protocols have been reported to be effective in prevention and treatment. The aim of this study was to summarize the recommendations of Persian medicine based on evidence in the prevention and treatment of symptoms of acute respiratory syndrome. METHODS: In this review article, keywords related to the symptoms of COVID-19 in Persian medicine sources, review and items related to the prevention and treatment of acute respiratory syndrome were extracted. Individual items with the keywords "Influenza" or "SARS" or "MERS" or "COVID-19" or "Coronavirus" or "Antiviral" or "Anti-inflammatory" or "Immune system" or "Antioxidant" were searched in the databases SID, Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of scienc...

Achieving reliable and valid research in ITM is very important to introduce this line of medicine into the healthcare organizations. The aim of this study was to investigate clinical research issues in ITM. This study is a qualitative research. We formed an expert panel and, after identifying the content, the study findings were divided into two main categories. Challenges of clinical research studies are divided into two major categories in ITM, the problems of clinical trial processes and the difficulties in publishing research results. Lack of standard data collection instruments and questionnaires, limited sample size, lack of study models designed for distemperament treatment, unawareness, and non-compliance of ethics committees in facilities approved by WHO for clinical research of TM, and even rigidity beyond conventional medicine studies are some of the previously mentioned issues....

Currently, the most commonly used drugs in the treatment of insomnia are the benzodiazepines, whose incidence of adverse events, such as cognitive disorders, drug dependence and reversal of symptoms after discontinuation restricts their use. This necessitates the need for more efficient treatments. In Iranian traditional medicine, insomnia and its therapies are widely discussed. In this study, it is revised the effect of materia medica on insomnia in traditional medicine. Method: This study is a library and literature review. The effective drugs in treating insomnia are searched in six reference books on pharmacology of traditional medicine, including The Canon of medicine, Alabnie an haghayegh al Advie, Reyaz al Advie, Tazkare Davood Antaki, Tohfat Al-momenin and Makhzan-al-advie.
