By applying Lacoue-Labarthe and Nancy's theory of the fragment, the mark of the 'incompletable incompletion' (1978), I will read Saroyan's formless autobiographical experiments (ranging from 1952 to the late 1970s) as the author's failure to endow his elusive identity with a stable meaning and order. The culmination of his concern with fragmentation finds its best expression in the finding of a stone, an object trouvé which operates either as the transcendentalist symbol of the recovery of the totality or else as a negative allegory in the sense adumbrated by Walter Benjamin, i.e., a concept which allows the author to revisit and interrogate history as the landscape of death and decline. Steeped in the mythical aura of Armenia as the country of stones, Saroyan's petrified fragment can only be interpreted not as a vehicle of unity and fulfilment but as a reminder of tragedy, dispersion, and the failure to coalesce, all of them inevitably linked with the writer's diasporic consciousness.

By examining the dialogicity implicit in the frame narrative, I propose to examine Karachi's tale as an example of "parodic skaz" which stands at odd with the author's ideology and operates as a concave mirror reflection of the tragic fate hovering over stateless minorities.

The Successful Life of 3, Molly's Dream, Sarita, The Conduct of Life y Mud subvierten, en mayor o menor medida y desde diferentes contrafórmulas teatrales, la dinámica de los géneros.

Since biography has been defined as the best arena in which to fight unexamined assumptions and prejudiced notions, postmodernist biographical research into Hemingway has invariably pursued the explosion of the myth of masculinity by asserting that the writer’s gender identity, the source of his psychological conflicts, was androgynous. Androgyny, a key word in gender-bending, implies the negation of a watertight system of binaries. Biography has thus not only pioneered the disruption of the writer as an icon of monolithic masculinity and allowed literary criticism to read his texts as containing a plurality of crosscutting gender identities. By using Hemingway as a case example, it has also been pivotal in helping us overcome the rigidity and inconsistencies of the dual system.

In the following article, I propose to decode some of the elusive symbols of the story, built up on Hemingway’s iceberg principle of writing, in connection with its propaganda message. My contention is that the zoo, a clear symbol of the total institution, operates as a microcosmic reflection of the city under siege. However, Gellhorn’s portrayal of the animals’ conditions in the zoo is one which, unlike her contemporaries’ grim reports, enhances images of fertility and procreation immersed in an Edenic enclave that, however, fails to banish death and betrayal. In addition to a detailed revision of some of the pre-war, war and post-war reports of the Madrid zoo, I wi...

In a world dominated by the uprooting of long established traditions, O. Henry's short fiction becomes the site wherein Darwin-dictated principles, gender roles and genre rules are either dislocated or subverted. Following Boris M. Ejxenbaum's idea (1927) that the writer's use of parody lays bare the construction of his stories, I propose to demonstrate that an intentional breaking of generic expectations lies behind the narrator's use of multifarious literary formulas.
