Kaffi and the ghoul by gresslok on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

It was a pretty calm day. Kaffi had been out, skipping around and searching for cool things to show Aether once this war was over. Maybe she could even get a cool reward for that! How neat wouldn’t that be? Her search had lasted since she had woken up 6AM this morning, until midday. She’s an early riser, also highly energetic which would explain how she could even stay out for that long to continue her search.

So far she had found a couple of cool looking stones and some neat sticks. Dang, if Aether didn’t want those, she’d sure keep them for herself and make something cool out of it. Although, how would she craft anything? She didn’t exactly have thumbs.. Maybe she could ask Aether to grant her a couple of useful thumbs? Or maybe Ares would give her thumbs if she ever woke up from her deep slumber? All Kaffi could do was to hope. If none of the Highlords wished to grant her wish for thumbs, she’d just have to surrender her items to one of the humans and just hope they’d make something for her.

Seen as Kaffi was currently deep in thought, she hadn’t noticed the fact that she’d ended up in a darker part of the forest she originally ventured out to. Where am I? This is not the forest of the stable grounds.. She thought to herself, slightly anxiously looking around, begging that nothing would just jump out of the bushes and attack her. She had never hunted anything before, she was too young for that. At least that’s what the stable owner that handled all the forest types had told her when they took Lafayette with them to hunt for deer. Why does always Lafayette get to experience the cool things? Even Blåbær got to join that hunt! Not fair!

Kaffi had yet again managed to fall deep in her own thoughts, and luckily she snapped out of it before she fell into a dark, muddy lake. “Yikes!” She shrieked, taking a hop backwards like a startled deer. It wasn’t far from the truth, seen as she practically acted like one 40% of the time. “That’s lake is distgusting! I love it!” She grinned, trotting over to the edge of it yet again, this time with curiosity written all over her face. Even though the lake was filthy, she could clearly see her own reflection, which has really managed to distract her. She tilted her head from side to side, admiring the crown Aether granted her after she had collected all of those cool looking gems and stuff that he needed. The golden crown shimmered beautifully, mesmerizing the young mare, distracting her from the fact that someone, rather, someone was sneaking up on her.

It wasn’t until she heard the creature growl loudly that she snapped out of it for the millionth time that day, resulting in a loud shriek from the mare. She jumped around, facing the ugly creature that she believed was the spawn of Hannibal himself. “Nasty!” She yelled, jumping to the side, snapping off a large branch from one of the spooky looking trees, ready to fight. If she wanted to prove herself to the humans that she wasn’t scared of this thing, maybe they’d let her join Lafayette and Blåbær on the next hunt! How exciting wouldn’t that be? The creature roared, spilling saliva all over the place. Some of it even hit Kaffi’s face, making her frown out of disgust. Its glowing eyes glared threateningly at her, making her feel small and useless. But no! She would fight this thing off! She will prove herself! To the humans! Heck, even to Aether himself.

“You’re not scaring me that easily!” She growled right back at the thing, even showing her sharp teeth threateningly. She then picked up the branch she had previously broken off the tree closest to her, ready to fend that ugly bastard off. She reared, and then lunged forward into a gallop, wildly swinging the branch at the creature. Kaffi got a good hit on the side of the creature’s face, making it yelp and stagger backwards, shaking its head violently. Kaffi halted, turning towards the creature again, observing it. Would it flee? Would it attack? A million thoughts seared through the young mare’s head right now. That mixed with adrenaline made it hard for her to focus. The fact that the creature seemed like it was even more pissed off now than before, didn’t exactly help with that. “NO!” She screamed, looking determined and fierce where she stood, her legs spread across the forest floor. “You are NOT ruining this for me!” She added just as fiercly, earning a roar from the ghoul-looking creature in front of her, and yet again she lunged at it. This time the ghoul was ready, meeting her halfway. Luckily for Kaffi, she still had her branch to defend herself with, and without that the ghoul would’ve probably had a good chunk of her neck in its ugly bony mouth.

The branch was lodged between the teeth of the ghoul, and it was fiercly trying to get at Kaffi’s face or neck. She couldn’t tell. What she did observe though, was the fact that this ghoul was pretty strong, and was currently pushing her backwards. Shit.. She thought. I’m slipping! She could literally hear her own heart beating faster than a pair of galloping hooves. This was the scariest experience she had ever had. What made it even worse was the fact that the branch was about to break under the force of the ghoul’s jaw. With the last of Kaffi’s newfound strength because of the adrenaline, she got up on her hind feet, slowly pushing the ghoul away with her front legs. As soon as the branch finally broke, Kaffi quickly turned around, giving the ghoul a powerful kick right square in the jaw. The crack of its skull roared loudly throughout the silent forest. Finally, the ghoul ran away, and Kaffi could declare this a strong victory. “I think I need threapy after this..”
